I'm not overly familiar with DSL, but it shouldn't be necessary, and my guess is that -- if both are gateways (combination modem/routers) and he's using wifi, he's feeding off the signal from the primary devices and the second device is just an ornament; in normal operation the secondary one shouldn't be able to do its job hooked through a router. It's also possible to use the primary as a bridge and the latter strictly as the router, if desired, but it doesn't sound like he's likely to have configured it such.

Indeed. The BT engineer left it like that after installation. If it was my connection I'd be looking into it, but this is just academic curiosity. When I'm ultra bored one day I'll look it up to see what's what.

Don't worry, there's an awful lot of BS about regarding broadband speeds, RSS. In truth, if you are the sole user in your household, and the most you do with it is watch TV via iPlayer, then I doubt if you actually notice it's that slow. Frankly, unless you're a total online gamer or a member of an entire family of independent users, mostly anything over 10 to 12Mb/s is a bit of a waste, anyway.

However, as your location is Southampton, I would try doing the speed test again and selecting another server. Maidenhead is often the speedy one of choice, IIRC. And another thing, Talk-Talk really ought to be able to provide you with something a little nippier than 3.6 Mb/s at no extra cost. Ask them about it. 8Mb/s really ought to be the minimum and fast enough for any sole user, bar the ultra online gamers.

Thanks TSS. I'm not the sole user, but its quick enough for what I use it for, which is very little. I tried the speed test from Maidenhead but with no significant change in result. When I eventually move out I'll look into getting up to 8Mb/s but for now, and as I don't pay for it, I'll be content with what I have. Interesting to know about nonetheless, so thanks.

Ordered my landlord at uni to do something about our internet, being on the top floor of our house my connection really suffered, and was absolutely abysmal, on the same level as Mr Nice's. 5 months later he finally sorted something out, put a new router on my floor and now it is amazing, amazing at least compared to what it was.

Shame I've had to suffer this whole time and now it is fixed i'm only here for another few weeks!

My internet generally leaves much to be desired in terms of both connectivity and speed, but when it rains my ping tops 1000, and I get the same down/up speeds as Dan. I have no faith in Virgin being remotely helpful though so when it rains I just start a camp fire in my living room, spit roast a pig and sing sea shanties (thats's what people did before the internet, right?).

The fastest I can get is 1.89 mbs, which is average for my village. The problem here is inadequate cabling from the local exchange throughout the village. Somerset County Council have promised that 80% of homes will have super fast broadband (whatever that is) by the end of 2015. Whoopdedoo.

That's called infinity by BT Chilco . Fran has it , as do I ( got it free/as I work for BT). Think Fran is pleased with hers , not impressed with mine because the network here is crap . FTTC is what Fran and I have , Fibre to the cab . What we all need is Fibre to the premesis, but that will take years.....some areas have it , but is usually new estates .

just ran that test . my ping is 70ms . upload is 4246kbps and download is 25668 kbps

What ever all that means........

Why are you using a server that's a 150 miles away? Surely Maidenhead or somewhere would make more sense.

Pretty decent. I've no idea what ping is, all I know is that when it comes to online gaming, the lower ping the better and generally refers to how laggy or otherwise it is.

Aha! Something I do know. Ping is simply the time it takes a message to go from one place to another and back again, in this case from your device to the server and back. So the shorter the time, the faster the service. Not the same as bandwidth, which is the amount of information you can send or receive per second.

Ping is called ping after the wartime submarine detection systems on destroyers, where the faster the ping, the closer the sub.

Indeed. Last night, amongst all the speedtesting, I did one for myself and found that the speed of the Cowes server was a tiny weeny bit faster, though nothing to boast about, faster than the Maidenhead server, or any other. However, Maidenhead produced a much faster ping result. At least double the speed, and reliably too. So it is still the server opf choice for speed tests.

I knew the first bit but not the second, makes sense I suppose but I never put two and two together, very interesting!

Hampshire, fresh off their thumping 9 wicket win over Essex in the YB40 are today playing.....Scotland. <laugh>

There's a retired scottish lady who passes by the shop most mornings. This morning, when she came past,I was eating my breakfast - some porridge.
Only thing is, I put sugar on it and not salt.

"That's nay porridge" she said, "That's PUDDING!"

Oh my god watching the IPL and Pollard has dropped the same batsman 3 times in a row! <laugh> <laugh>
