This is where I am going to seeth with indignation over the current War On Racism

    From the BBC site:

"An Arsenal supporter has admitted throwing a banana at Tottenham Hotspur star Gareth Bale during the north London derby last month.

"Thomas Flint, 23, a carpenter from Enfield, threw the missile during the game at White Hart Lane on 3 March."

He was prosecuted for this act, and rightly so. But what if the target were black? I would wager anything that the same event would then be classed as a racial assault whereas the same offence against Bale wouldn't be.

Don't get me wrong; I am not against sorting out racism but I can see certainly spot a thin end of a wedge.

If I remember rightly, all the banana throwing started at - where else --- St james' during a derby match when Sunderland had 2 black players.
    Talk about pots and kettles.

Whatever happened thirty years ago has very little to do with the poster, he possibly wasn't born then or aware of it.
And it was against West Ham actually, Bobby Barnes.

Oh I was definiely born then. And well out of my short trousers too.

But that's not the point I was making as you may well appreciate.

As for the fact that this unpleasant activity was supposed to have started at St James Park; so what? Would you have me airbrush history because it happened at "my ground"? That isn't the point. I am not here to pretend that Newcastle fans were always angels, they weren't, and the point of the original comment is not to say Our Fans Are Better Than Yours which is both petty and pointless but to point out that the actions by the Powers That Be are two faced.

    You simply don't understand. Sorry.

The disgraceful act of throwing a banana at a black player is reflecting an attitude to ALL black players, and ALL black people. It is demonstrating the belief that black people are inferior and akin to monkeys. It is a disgusting, disgusting racist act.

Throwing a banana at Gareth Bale demonstrates that you think HE, and he alone, looks like a monkey. Clearly, that is not an act incited by any form of racism.

    This shouldn't need spelling out.

One is an act of racism, the other isn't.

I was at that match and nobody threw pots and kettles, however I do remember the Sunderland fans saying they were going to throw the kitchen sink at us.

Talk about stones and glass houses.

It's a dodgy one. Certainly not to me as clean-cut as Durham_Mag suggests.

I've made a joke about Gareth Bale's appearance, "he couldn't look anymore like a regression in human evolution if he was bounding across the turf on all fours, but by god he's some player", and it's one that doesn't really sit right because of the racism campaign. Is it alright to laugh at someone because they have a bald head, a massive nose, look like me, or have the bone-structure of a monkey? Fundamentally, it's one and the same thing, and taking the piss of physical features is something that has been apart of human communication for a very long time, ironically since we were all pealing banana's with our feet.

Obviously the slavery issue is important in this regard, but in some senses an objective view gives a narrow leap to a very desensitized and non-communicative society. Let's face it, about the same proportion of black and white people have the sloping forehead and widened cheeks of early ancestors, but with the former it takes on historic symbolism, and according to our upbringing and education, the subjective law protecting black people is the right one. When you logically rationalise it, it's a bit unfair, but the rules change with the passing of time and the versatility of thought.

    <laugh>

I have a tip for today lads. I was speaking to the owners and trainers of a horse at Newcastle last week. They had made a fortune from a gamble and said the horse in question was better than its form and worth keeping in mind. Its runs again today at Doncaster - Beaumonts Party in the 4.05. Might be worth a little bet as they seemed pretty confident there was more to come.

For what it's worth, I have that one top rated in my own ratings, though the two to be wary of would be Hellview Boy and Carazam. But the strong positive for Beaumont's Party is the distance today. It will be backed here and it's good to hear from a confirmatory source. Thanks.

At the end of the day, these stupid acts should just be ignored, not made a fuss over.

No bother lads, few extra pints to celebrate with tomorrow! AB - probably for the best you'd have only weighed it down with your 100 large!!! <laugh> Keep an eye out for it, Ellison and the owners just reckon penny had dropped with it. Nice bloke Brian Ellison mind.

If the pot really did call the kettle black, is that being racist, or just stating a fact?
