Loads of people are saying the world will end at like 6... obviously not true, but does anyone know why people are saying this?

Cant seem to find anything on it

Just found this on wiki.. <laugh>

Harold Egbert Camping (born July 19, 1921) is a liar who says the world's going to end to make more money but is is a peice of crap. Christian radio broadcaster and president of Family Radio, a California-based religious broadcasting network that spans more than 150 outlets in the United States as well as a website.

Camping's trademarks include his deep, sonorous voice coupled with a slow cadence. He has also used Bible-based numerology to predict dates for the end of the world. His most recent end times prediction is that the Rapture will occur on May 21, 2011 and that God will subsequently completely destroy the Earth and the universe five months later on October 21. He had previously predicted that the Rapture would occur in September 1994.

It turns out the theory comes down to two numerological proofs.

The first proof is based on Genesis 7:4, when God said to Noah: "Seven days from now I will send rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights, and I will wipe from the face of the earth every living creature I have made."

When God referred to seven days, he meant both seven days and seven thousand years, because "one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day." The flood occurred in 4990 BC. Seven thousand years later is 2011.

The second proof looks at the significance of the number of days between the Crucifixion and May 21, 2011.

There are 722,500 days between these dates. 722,500 is a significant number because it is composed of the significant numbers 5x10x17x5x10x17. Five signifies redemption; ten signifies completion; and 17 signifies heaven. The numbers represent the day of redemption (5) and the end of the Christian era (10) and the ascent to heaven (17) -- and these factors are doubled for added significance.

Apparently....

The last few words prove it isn't true... " and these factors are doubled for added significance ". Basically, the numbers didn't add up so some bloke just went ".... double it and see what happens" and got lucky.

It's just like the Mayans thing but a year and a half earlier... which is equally bollocks, obviously. People think that the Mayans predicted the end of the world... they didn't, it's just their calendar ended. They were planning on making another calendar afterwards most likely, but then they all got wiped out. Which is another thing, if they managed to predict the end of the world how come they couldn't predict their OWN deaths?
That's just the equivalent of people getting irate and scared every December 31st because that's when their calendar ends...

Umm, there are 7001 years from 4990 to 2011...

Sounds like how they 'discovered' the devil's number. Emperor Nero was a Jew and hated Christians, so they decided to link him to evil, so using Hebrew numerology they wrote his name in numbers (which was 666) and said it was the devil's number.

You guys are gonna ****ing regret mocking the old fella when Yahweh begins the Rapture.

And God's going to be even more pissed off than usual when He realises He has to wait an hour between time-zones. <grr>

Christian Aid just knocked on the door asking for donations. Surely they don't need my earthly possessions and money on the day their Lord is ascending them and leaving us heathens here to die?
