As far as I remember, Bauhaus, The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen and Siouxsie and the Banshees were the order of the day.
Liverpool is a good night out, but it helps if you're with a local, you don't want to end up in the wrong place. I once ended up in a club near the bombed out church(Bold St area) and I was lucky to get out alive.
ive been to some great gigs in Leeds , always a great atmosphere , its lightyears ahead of Hull as you still see families out around midnight doing normal ****.
Call lane is the place to be, although if it's just you and a mate you won't get in without girls, the bouncers there really take the piss.
Anyone remember Mr Craigs Nightclub ? Nowadays the Calls is deffo the place to be, after some decent grub in Anthony's Restaurant ( the one downstairs, not the one above flannels, or the bistro). I seem to remember the hotel I last stayed in had an half decent Skybar in it, which was convenient. you'll have a brill night.
Been there plenty of times, it's more of an after work place than a weekend. Full of office totty any work day. Not far off Call Lane now...
Right then, I am back. I am hungover and tired. Nevertheless, I had a good night. I went down Call Lane, I went to some other places too which I am desperately trying to recall accurately, but I'm finding it hard. Went to some pub/bar/club called Sandinista or Sandiniva or Sandomans or something. ****ing crammed, played Spiders style music. Left there, went to Call Lane, some bar down there with 2 floors. The decor was kind of tropical island ****, deliberately tacky. I was steaming drunk by then. Wanted to watch City in a sports bar called Tykes or something like that, but they had Man City on and ****ing Hull KR. When asked if they'd put City on they said "someone wants the rugby on"...****ing rubbish. Also, did that Bourbon bar. I liked it, but suffered from an immense bout of hiccups in there. All in all, a fun night. My friend lives in an apartment not far from the Calls Landing pub, it's just a haven of new looking apartment blocks round there for miles and miles. A lot of development. A bit soulless maybe? Anyway, I liked Leeds. I would go again. Over and out.
Nice work Party. Blimey you covered some distance - Sandinista to Call Lane is ****ing miles! The tacky tropical place you refer to is Call Lane Social. Its weird - downstairs is really normal with a good playlist and upstairs they have this weird Hawaii **** on the walls. Mental. I watched City in the Sports Bar on Headrow because everywhere else had Man City on. It was hell on earth - stank of sick and full of stag-dos. A few other City in there too.
Yeah we did a lot of walking! Also did a bar called Aire Bar, watched the footy scores in there. We went to another place that for some reason reminded me of Lamp. Went down some stairs, a kind of indie style pub with a DJ spinning away on the decks. I think it was on Call Lane, or at least very close. There was some doofus in there lifting his shirt up all the time trying to make out he had ace abs, in front of some girls who clearly weren't interested. I called him a loser, resulting in a stand off for a brief moment before I was ushered into another pub. He was a proper dick, seriously.
I know when my lad used to go to see his mate at Leeds Uni he said he hadn't had to bother with nightclubs as the bars were all open so late and you could be in one getting a breakfast first thing in the morning. Puts so called "vibrant" Hull to shame when nearly everywhere is shut by 11.30 even in the supposedly continental style Avenues area and the only choices are a few crap bars packed with under 25's or nightclubs where you pay to get in and listen to blaring music you don't like if you are over 30. Even then the nightclubs, thanks to the police and local authority, are closed before the bars in Leeds. And, in Leeds you can go out as a family or if you are older later than in Hull as there are places for all groups, not just gangs of younger folk on a piss up.Yet, for some reason, we keep hearing of plans to attract visitors for the weekend. Why would they bother? Ironic when in the late sixties, early seventies, when places were shut early everywhere, that people from Leeds used to travel to Hull as it was a better night out. Now when you can set later hours the situation is reversed.
It's really not. I will confess to not knowing a lot about Newland. But Witham? Jesus Christ, unless you enjoy getting groped by some 50 year old divorcee then it's not a good night out at all. Old Town's only open til 2 at the latest, and it's still fairly ****, there's always some **** DJ speaking over the music "let's a give big happy birthday to Sharon who's 42 but still dresses like a 21 year old!" followed by Queen or an Abba medley.
