True Imaz dictators these days just don't cut the mustard like they used to. I was working in Cairo in the mid 90s on the metro scheme and Mubarak turned up to open a station in a fleet of bullet proof stretched S class mercs

    A nice touch

Speaking of dictators, I remember the day Obama's "Beast" got stuck coming out of the US embassy in Dublin a year or two ago. I couldn't stop laughing!

This is a good thread. Really enjoyable. I love the Wubba and Woody sub-plot, that is definitely stranger than fiction. Great stuff.
As for the cars, some of what your saying is lost on me. How do you get to drive these amazing machines?

I consider myself a driver, it's a major part of my job. I have practically every license available. I completed the Police system of driving a couple of years ago. I thought I was a good driver before I did that, but bloody oh Reilly . It's not until you do that course that you realise how little you know. Not for the feint hearted, I can assure you of that. Country bends at 100mph? It's great fun when your driving but not when your the passenger.

Guess what the instructors reckoned was the best pound for pound car on the road was? I was surprised, and I'm now looking to trade my Jag in for one. I don't think anyone on here will be able to name it.

Was going to say Volvo. My motor's a 10 year old v70. 170,000 miles and good as new. Good for work and fits the whole clan plus dog with ease.

Enough with cars. Only motorcycles can achieve true mechanical beauty.

If by "pound for pound" he means price multiplied by reliability, I would say Volvo for certain.

If he means price times performance, I'd go for the relatively humble Ford Focus.

She doesn't claim to know the O'Sullivans, wubba, but i wouldn't bet against your paths having crossed. She's kipping on the sofa now, so can't extract any more detail.

Your close mate, but even more so in your opening salvo. It's not a Volvo or a Ford. Your correct with the pound for pound analogy. This is of course not my own opinion but that of several Class 1 drivers who can do amazing things with a four wheeled vehicle. I was very fortunate to get the course for free and an insight to many amazing driving techniques. Some people would of payed a hell of a lot of money for the privelage.

If you want to know how to perform a J-Turn whilst under a terrorist attack whilst using a Hechler & Koch, then PM me.

So we're talking VW or VW related. Could be the Scirocco or the Golf itself? Maybe its its cousin the Octavia?

Could have done with that when I was in the Taxi game! :emoticon-0102-bigsm

    Beautiful motor Andy.

I'm wary of Yank Tanks though. A lot of them weigh about 3 tonnes and get about 9 MPG.

The rear axle torque makes it one helluva bitch to drive too. Even an above average driver will struggle with one of these.

Not a Scirroco or a Golf ( Although the 80's Golf was a proper drivers car and very under estimated. ) nor was it an Octavia.

Don't give up mate. I've pretty much narrowed it down for you.

    It's quite modern?

As I say, it's not my personal choice. Although I wouldn't mind one myself. I would get one tomorrow but my Jag has no significant re-sale value, so I may as well drive it into the ground before buying a new motor. I like it, but the family don't. The sports function takes the car to a whole new-level. I have an endowment cashing in soon, I might just treat myself.
