Things are very quiet on here these days so I thought I'd start a thread on all things cars. Now I'm far from a petrol head but I do like to check out different motors I see driving about the place. So I'll start off:

Anyone seen/driven the new Mk 7 Golf yet? I believe they went on sale in the last few days. I was never mad about the Golf but its started to grow on me recently. These days cars are all curves and "bubble" looking but VW have kept the Golf with nice traditional straight lines and it still looks like an actual car rather than a deep sea creature.

These CarBuyer reviews tend to be on the money:

best car I've ever had was a jag xj40 4ltr straight 6. pure class.
best car ever driven was Maserati quotroporte. 4.2 ltr v8 500bhp even doing 120mph it gripped the road effortlessly.

Gotta agree with the boy ink, you need a jag in your life. I've still got my grandfathers old xj6. Not particularly modern but great to smoke about in

No idea on mk7 golfs I find most modern cars pretty soulless

Maserati? Bloody hell they're fast. Never got near one mind you, just seen it on Top Gear!!

That'd do the dash in under five seconds, would it Inked? Fastest car I drove was a Porsche 9 11, 3.6 flat 6. Went like a rocket!

I've got some sympathy for that point of view Wubba. A lot of modern cars are indistinguishable from one another not to mention lacking in the "fun to drive" department.

My late father in law was a Maserati man. Obsessed from a young age with the engine, he bought a 1963 3500 GTI in 1972 and spent years of his spare time restoring it. It was a stunning motor, with a hefty growl. It was the beginning of the rest of his life, he gradually developed a business restoring maseratis and it's still going strong now.

Incidentally, he also loved the golf, owned a few and left his 2003 2.0 Tdi to my missus. He had chipped it - it goes like the clappers.

A genius under the bonnet - written on his stone.

Really hate to appear to brag guys, best car I've driven is my McLaren MP4. Apart from the R's, I'm a huge petrolhead. Wife wants me to take up gambling or develop a mild drug habit instead, as it would save money.

Not bill McGrath in Hertfordshire was he woody? I had a ghibli a few years back and the man weaved his magic keeping that perpetual electrical nightmare on the road. Traded it in for my little fiat 126. From 300bhp to 29 but more fun and a damn sight cheaper

I had a 1.6l Golf (well...my girlfriend had one), and it was brilliant. Flew along...sadly flew into the stag that jumped in front of me when doing 60mph. So I can also vouch for the Golf as a solidly built, safe car...if it wasn't I'm not sure we'd have walked away from the dead stag in one piece.

Jesus H Christ, now there is a machine. T'would give a Lambo a run for its money. Have you ever opened her up full throttle mate? I'm guessing you got round to that somehow

You've already got a dysfunctional drug habit mate. Its called QPR!

I'm poor so this won't be exciting.

Best car ever owned: Spanish built Citroen Acadiane van or Renault 12. Both indestructable and bomb proof mechanically.

Best ever driven (for their time): Alfa Romeo Alfetta 2.0 or Autobianchi A112 Abarth.

Sadly am reduced to a Skoda diesel these days. :(

Good few years ago now. '94ish I think. I had a 222 biturbo that was a POS and I was 'persuaded' by them to upgrade to the ghibli. Andy heywood used to do the tinkering for me mostly. My best mate lives in tewin and he used to cane them to bills and back for me. I ended up with a khamsin but when I moved up to Sheffield I started going to see mario at auto shield in Manchester as it was a lot nearer

    Small world

I had the car since August 2011, it is one of the first customer cars. I love cars but am a ****e driver (no nerve or ability). It has just been upgraded to 625bhp by the factory. I've never really opened it up to be honest, the car is so very fast that I would lose my license. I've had all sorts of silly exotica, but the guys at McLaren are fantastic and make you feel special. It also costs no more to service than a BMW. If you are ever near Watford, Herts pm me and you can have a ride.

Despite the constant downers, mood swings, and (very) occasional highs, I still cannot kick the RRR's habit.

Wow! That's brilliant to hear. Andy runs the business now. Small work indeed.
