I know we all think we're pundits and that's the point of a message board but any manager would tell you that backward passing is not a bad thing, it's even more embarrassing when the fans at the stadium start groaning because we passed it backwardsIt's part of the game, you pass it forwards when there's space to but if there isn't you keep the ball.
you were the guy that said it was best ignoring people who slated people back-passing, -- then you respond - doooohh ..... backward passing is not a bad thing but Dawson cant use his right foot at all - what does the guy do in training, hes had years to sort it - if it goes anywhere other than wide left, he stops and holds up play so he can get it on his left foot and then passes backwards - more often than not nowadays to an opponent - the guys lost it - gone are the days of that fantastic sliding tackle that stopped Walcott getting through on goal - different times, different player - shadow of former self - theres the hook, hang up your boots before you do further damage to your reputation

We have far worse players than Cairney, half of Saturday's team were worse than him and if we're going to slate them all, we're going to need a lot of taxi's.
Clearly the manager asks them to play the same role, it's not as if we're changing the way we play depending on which one of them is in the line-up. That's why Bruce has decided we need a new midfielder, because Tom CAN'T play the role he wants. If he did think Tom could do it we wouldnt be busting a gut to sign Meyler.
I'll say it again - Meyler has proven on the evidence of 1 month to be exactly what we need from a centre midfielder. Tom hasnt had a good game in 3 years. DM has been dominating games, grabing hold of the match by the scruff of the neck, proving a threat both when attacking and at breaking up the opposition whereas Tom is either unwilling or unable to do any of these things. So while Bruce is manager we might as well not have him.
TC obviously has ability, but there is something lacking with his mental approach to a game. The Orient game should have been a chance for him to take charge of the game and show he can dictate the mid-field, but he disappoints too many time.

maybe SB needs to employ a sports psychologist to help Tom sort his head out.
Cairney is a decent squad player and a player who will get a chance when either Evans, Meyler or Quinn are unavailable
They were pretty much all poor, but I think if we have an injury or suspension almost anyone who was in the team on saturday can come in and do a job. But the side that played just lacked quality in the midfield.
To Bum Chinned--Why do you come out with statements like he hasnt had a good game in 3 years? Before his injury at Doncaster Steve Bruce said TC was playing very well and would be missed. His first gamne back off the bench he looked very tidy. Do you miss these games?
He is more than adequate back up, he can be brought on to do a job and out of all the midfielders we have, can be relied on most to keep the ball and not lose possession.

No, I just miss what other people see when they think he played well. Hand on heart, I havent seen him have what I consider a good game outside the top flight and I personally think some seem to have a kind of misplaced loyalty to him. It's almost as if he was home grown and people have a special place in their hearts for him. Despite what a lot of people think he didnt come through our youth ranks.
Cairney played well when he came on as sub recently, was it Huddersfield?
Not sure if you're still talking about Cairney but he never does that, his vision is superb. Dawson I agree is a lot more one-footed even though Cairney's one-footedness is exaggerated more and he (Daws) does sometimes force the team back unecessarily but I think that's more because he can't run at a man and take him on (that's never been his game) so he prefers to turn back and keep the ball which is right under the circumstances. The issue is that he can't take people on.
I agree he can't do what Meyler does. If Cairney was going to replace anyone in the first XI it would have to be Evans because he needs to play deep moving the ball around, he's not the box-to-box type player that Meyler is, making those surging runs to score goals.
Meyler, Quinn, Evans & Cairney are all different types of player, which is what makes them valuable to the squad

I am all for debate and people offering different opinions but when people try and rewrite history to back up their point its a bit lame.
Im talking about Dawson. I feel Cairney has the potential, but like Stewart, is hampered mentally by his injury.
I thought Cairney looked like one of the few who put any effort in on Saturday.
Cairney, Jakupovic, McShane and Proschwitz were the only players trying to do anything - the rest looked like they weren't bothered about being there. As Jakupovic didn't have too much to do, but did what was needed of him when called into action and Proschwitz is in the category of 'trying', although not being effective for 75% of the game, he did at least try - which leaves only Cairney and McShane left as to who was most deserving of MOTM, in my opinion.
