It was an actual H16. Two 1.5 V8's flattened to 180 degrees and placed on top of each other to form what was in effect a double-boxer configuration.

It looks a tad complicated.
It wasn't famed for reliability. Vibration issues were the main problem. You'd have thought BRM wouldn't have tried another 16 cylinder as their V16 of the early 50's wasn't a success. Does make a pretty mean noise though!
