Formula One's Greatest Drivers: #4 Michael Schumacher (MSC)

I personally think its really hard to compare drivers of different eras, so I don't like the list and it seems like it will be biased in the end (from the English media! Never!) Not the biggest Schumi fan but if we were doing this based simply on statistics then he takes the top spot easily. Also, Benson is a twat, I think we could probably all agree on that.

Looks like if you take out a Brit in a Williams and win 7 WDC's the BBC will rate you 4th in the standings, if you take out a Frenchman in a Ferrari and win 3 WDC's you get number 1 in the standings, biased much BBC?

I assume there was more thought put into it than that.

I know i give the guy some stick, but if they're dropping him to number 4 for dubious driving, then they cannot give number 1 to Senna. He did it too.

• I agree it is difficult – no, I'll go further: it's actually impossible to make any meaningful comparison of drivers from different eras in such a way as to rank them in order.
  
• I have very little interest in the BBC's (or anyone else's) ranking list and have taken their successive revelations with appropriate quantities of salt.
  
• I also hold a poor view of their journalist called Benson.
  
• As for the subject matter of this thread – which itself is evidence of the BBC's success in generating gossip – Schumacher was and is massively over-rated: I rank him no higher than 11th and possibly as low as 13th. Seriously.

P.S. Any list is necessarily biased unless based entirely and completely upon statistics, which fortunately, most of us know is far less than the whole story. And here is the simple reason:
'Greatness', when applied to human beings, is a qualitative term; it is not a quantitative one.

I made a contradiction? Where? But yes, I agree it really all comes down to bias and everyone is always going to have a different opinion so its kind of pointless to argue about it.

Lest there remain further doubt, there is at least one contradiction in my own post; which although based on the truth of my own opinion, was meant as a bit of fun to highlight the necessarily subjective nature of any opinion…

Aha, that makes more sense. I blame tiredness for not noticing that, studying for Thermo will do that I also wouldn't have Schumi in my top 10 personally, but hey, thats just my opinion.

the others in the top 5 didn't need to have stipulations written into their contracts, and they all raced their team-mates in equal machinery, something Schumacher was unwilling to do, illegal equipment, special tyres, constant team-orders, the others didn't need it to win theirs.
