Aye, I install AVG Free, disable it from start up then run it twice a year just in case something is going wrong - but certainly since Windows 7 I haven't had a virus. I can remember installing a Vanilla version of Windows XP, hooking it up to an unfirewalled broadband connection and within 30 seconds of first boot it was infected****s just using port scanners waiting for a response from 10 billion network connections. Microsoft closed down Admin access by default in Vista though, which stopped a lot of that type of bawbaggery.
Yep, hardware firewall is essential. Almost all routers these days have a built in firewall and are configured to allow **** all incoming connections by default.
Never been a fan of software firewalls. Those too are right obtrusive and annoying ****s.
