Yep, hardware firewall is essential. Almost all routers these days have a built in firewall and are configured to allow **** all incoming connections by default. Never been a fan of software firewalls. Those too are right obtrusive and annoying ****s.
...and are stealth by default anaw. Which means it just drops and doesn't respond to passing port scanners.
Yer on a thread which is called 'Computer nerds' complaining because everyone is talking about computers?

Nerd off, me vs Gambol. I'm such a nerd I've used up all the Port Forwarding slots in my home Cisco router UI and I have to use telnet to create more rules. Only 15 slots on a Cisco?
I don't really know what the **** you lot are on about, but the only problem I have had with my laptop before was a few weeks ago, when I pressed some of the keys, different letters would type on the screen. It was admittedly just about 20 minutes after I got a bit of spunk on the keyboard, so I left it for a few hours by a fan and then it was fine, I bet firewall couldn't do that.
You win. I widny have thought of that. So, ye port forward to telnet and use some kinda script to discrimate which service you are actually forwarding to?
I must admit that before joining this site, I knew **** all about the inner workings of my computers, but I've learned so much since coming on here. And I still feel that I know **** all
Nah there is a .cfg file with the rules statically stored - just need to use a text editor to change it. The router didn't have telnet access by default so I had to install a hacked image. I really should have installed DD-WRT on it, but since I didn't I can't now be annoyed taking down half the services running out of my house for hours while I figure out how to configure it.
