great win over the weekend, must say i half thought about turning the game off after the wigan goal...thank god I didn't!
And now I can't help but join in on the 'who should we sign this summer' banter, not that our 'expert' opinions make a difference, however I always enjoy speculating for lack of anything else to do.
I think everyone would agree that we need two strikers, natural fullbacks and atleast some of our on-loan players to stay. But for this article I'd like to just talk about the two strikers.
I personally would like a young unproven player with bags of potential, and a very experienced striker who may be a bit passed it but still has a few years left in the tank. An example for the young player for me would be VICTOR MOSES. With wigan likely to go down, and him not playing a great part in their season i think he could come for cheap. I've seen him play a few blinders for england and crystal palace respectively, and he has A LOT to give. He just needs the right manager, and mentor. I think the bubbliness of Gyan, and the know-how of the right experienced striker could really help blossom our young strikers and even midfielders.
I work in the football industry and I can tell you first hand that strikers values goes down as quickly as it goes up. You can get an experienced striker (one even with champions league experience) for close to nothing, followed with a contract that's more incentive based ie. michael owen's contract with man utd. I don't know if the likes of Van Nistelrooy would come to sunderland, but there are plenty out there. To give you a little insight, Frederico Chaves Guedes more commonly known as FRED formerly of Lyon was offered to my company to sign with virtually any team outside of Brazil...even asian teams seemed like a ok for him. He is only 27 and the team simply requested that his contract be completely bought out, and also 250,000 euros as a transfer fee/compensation fee. We are talking about a player who has played for BRAZIL and the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE who's only 27 and would be available for 1 million quid.
Now i'm not saying he's the signing for us, although i would love to see him at sunderland, (strong, powerful, good feet) my point is that there are tons out there. We don't have to spend tens of millions, we just need to allocate the money which we luckily have in places where they belong.
I can easily see us spending 20-30 million this summer, but also suspect a few may be leaving...i just hope we keep building. But for this season I want to see the youngsters given a chance, also riveros and the Argentinian pretty boy.
thoughts??
