Exactly, the McLean argument has been done to death, a striker shouldn't be solely judged on goals. He's played out of position, yet consistently delivers in terms of work rate. Every successful team needs players like McLean, there contribution to games (excluding goals) is invaluable. Defending from the front, energy etc
work rate etc is very commendable and a team does need players like that, but at this level where in some games you may only get 1 chance in a game, you need to be pretty confident your striker is capable of taking it, can you honestly say you bother getting out your seat when you see its mclean going in on goal and dont take that oppurtunity to check your phone for texts?
Not a coinsidence that its not far away from the Airport! Watch out for aircraft landing on the pitch! Should be a good player for donny, and should be fun when we play them in the cup
He scored some important goals last season, in a team that was anything but prolific. The reality is very few strikers in this league will convert every chance, or they would be at a top 4 team in the Premier. McLean in a free scoring team will be a hugely different proposition to the strikers we had living off scraps last season. We averaged a goal a game, by championship standards is piss poor. Probably only bettered by teams occupying relegation places.
He's played out of position as he is a poor striker. If he'd have banged a few hat tricks in Pearson would have stuck with 4-4-2. As you always have to pay more for strikers, we are paying too much for a right midfield player. As we are still looking for another winger i dont see him featuring regularly. 20 mins off the bench at best, we wont renew his contract will whenever it ends. May be gone at Xmas.
Yes, quite. He's played out of position because we played a **** formation. In a 4-4-2 with proper service and a proper strike partner he'd have scored 10+ last season easily. Robin Van Persie would have struggled to score in our team last year.
Struggle to agree, if we'd played that 4-2-3-1 with RVP as the front man I think he'd have scored 40+.
We signed him in the January of the previous season, he played up front with Fryatt and couldnt hit a barn door. Sorry. OLM seems to think he would have gone if Nick had been in charge still and i firmly believe SB will come to that conclusion too. Saying that i hope he plays up front with Prozzy tomorrow and nets a hat trick.
Mclean simply isn't a Championship footballer, he's a nice bloke and he works hard, but he just doesn't have the quality. He started off playing 4-4-2 with Fryatt, he was only moved due to not being good enough. As Chazz has mentioned, had Nick stayed in charge, he'd have gone by now and I wouldn't be surprised if he's gone by the end of the Jan window.
