I'd agree for this window/season, but we can't keep this XI forever!

For me I wouldnt even care how pacey the RM is, aslong as they can pinpoint cross the ball. If we are going to rely on Lambert as heavily as last year the crosses need to be spoon fed to him. For example, Jarvis isnt all that pacey as wingers go, but he could land the ball on Rickie's choice of freckle if he wanted :D

Oh totally, but as we don't have Man City money, we need to develop the side over time. A key signing in this transfer window, a key signing a that transfer window etc. Slowly build and evolve, bringing the best kids through along the way.

And a similar thing applies to our bench. I can invisage a time in the future when our bench is just as strong as the starting XI, and that when one guys drops out injured no-one notices the difference. But for now, very much in the short-term, I think we just need to improve that bench - not neccessarily get it right up to the standard of the first XI.

Hooiveld doesn't worry me, think he will be ok. Fonte looked poor alot of last season, so I don't know if he could step up.

I expect you, like many others were bellyaching that England shouldn't play Milner on the wing. Look at the wingers/wide players at the Euros - Ronado, Nani, Podolski, Mueller, Silva, Iniesta etc - none of those are at all defensive and their teams look comfortable playing like that because they keep the ball and keep their shape when they don't have the ball. Cast your eye back to L1 and we dominated midfield at St Mary's because our 2 were so much better than everyone else's it was unreal. That's not the case anymore so we should move Lallana central to add an extra outlet. With that 3 and our passing/movement, I do think we could play with attacking wingers. Whether that's Jay Rod and Lee, I'll decide when the window is closed, but I do think we could play like that if we wanted to.

No I wasn't, but your point about Milner seems to contradict the rest of your argument.

All those wingers you mentioned played for semi-finalists, they are teams who dominate games, and they all have world-class full-backs. We have just been promoted, and our full-backs were vulnerable even before that, it's not a fair comparison.

We need defensive solidity more than anything else this season, unlike before when we've been dominating games and have needed to break down defensive teams. It's not going to be the same.

With three in the middle it's possible, but Lee and Rodriguez aren't even wingers, they're forwards, they will not be reliable enough defensively and they won't be able to provide width or crosses in the way that specialised wingers would either.

    http://www.vitesse.nl/nieuws/bericht/vitesse-en-southampton-akkoord-over-ba-ttner/2721

"Vitesse and Southampton have agreed with the transition from Alexander Büttner for The Saints. The left says as soon as possible to the Premier League candidate for the medical examination.

Both clubs were the last days together discussing the transition from the 23-year-old defender. Vitesse Friday, July 6 the improved offer from the English club from the Premier League accepted. This leaves Alexander Büttner immediately to Southampton.

Through his excellent season at Vitesse if the defender is in the interest of several rejoice clubs, including Southampton.

    More .. Later ."

    Another brilliant translation. <laugh>

It's a sign of the times that we try to keep our transfers quiet, yet us fans manage to pick up on rumours and deals no matter where they are. Be it England, Holland, Japan...we always find a way of unearthing deals.

Speaking of which, I know not everyone has Nicola levels of media silence, but I was pretty surprised to see QPR basically confirming the Buttner rumour on their own official website! Bit naughty isn't it? http://www.qpr.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10373~2829091,00.html

It's always been that way and it always will be. As quiet as we want to be, there are other parties involved and they have other priorities.
