If we're going the DoF route, we shouldn't be meeting with AVB, or any other manager, because it's the DoF's job to pick the manager they work with - Levy got this so hopelessly wrong last time we had the DoF system, overruling Arnesen's pick of Jol to bring in Santini, then installing Comolli (an error in itself) but retaining Jol. With we bring in AVB then a DoF, it would be facepalms all around.
"It could be a particularly interesting day for Tottenham fans. BBC Sport's Ben Smith reports they have made contact with representatives of former Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas as the club's search for a new manager gathers pace." (Source: BBC Football, breaking news site) Let me state, for the record, that I am deeply ashamed of Levy.
Does the expression "be careful what you wish for" spring to mind? I too wanted to see the back on Redknapp HIAG but not if this clown gets his job instead! For Levy to even consider AVB is bad enough. To then officially make contact to discuss the job places many question marks over Levy's ability to make the right decisions as the Chairman. This is starting to look increasingly worrying. I was fuming at Jol's sacking. In despair over Ramos' appointment. I think I'll be suicidal if AVB gets the job. If they have approached AVB's representatives first, doesn't that appear to make him their first choice candidate? Holy **** this season could be a disaster!
I can't believe the amount of negative reaction Villas-Boas is getting. I really can't! I'm not saying everyone should be ecstatic about it, but at least give him a chance FFS, I'm going to stick my neck out and say if we give him a fair shot, he'll do a bloody good job for us.
I'd love to believe that, but I cannot. He didn't just fail at the Chavs, he was a complete disaster, and was the primary reason for their abject failing, last season. Already, there is talk of our players rebelling against the appointment, and it hasn't even happened yet! The only reason I can think of why Levy is going after AVB is because he will be cheap, having just got the sack, whereas Moyes and Martinez will be expensive. I love my club, but I hate the way it is being run, at the moment.
I would give him a chance if someone can offer me a decent argument as to what he can offer us in footballing terms over Redknapp or any other candidate for that matter? He never played the game and only started in management 3 years ago!
I'm not at all. I just think it's quite funny that he's been asked to pick out a couple of players and he chose Ronaldo. I have never wanted Moyes at Spurs though, nothing to do with this!
Never playing the game is not a bad thing (not necessarily saying it's a good thing either though). Jose Mourinho is a decent manager I suppose, and he never played professional football. Villas-Boas knows has more knowledge of tactics than Redknapp could dream of. His one, crucial fault at Chelsea was trying to implement his style of football too quickly. As a part of introducing his style, he needed to gradually phase out the likes of Terry, Lampard and to a lesser extent Drogba. Terry and Lampard are good players, no doubt, but Terry especially just doesn't fit the type of player AVB wanted. His style needs centre backs who are quick, good on the ball, and can slot in for the full back when they bomb forward - Terry can't really do that. At Spurs, we have Kaboul, who is pacey, and used to play RB, so could very easily slot in there when Walker bombs forward, and hopefully Vertonghen, who is a ball-playing, pacey CB, who plays LB for his country, so he could slot in for Benny too. Perfect. He also needs two wingers, who will score plenty of goals, but also drop in and help the midfield when the opposition have the ball. At Chelsea he had Mata and Sturridge. Mata was good for the role, but Sturridge barely tracked back at all, and as such, left the midfield and RB exposed. When you have Bosingwa at RB, this is a recipe for disaster. We would have Bale and Lennon. Bale tracks back more than any other winger I know, and has the engine to do it all day and all night. Lennon is also very good at this role, but he won't chip in with the goals AVB would want from a winger, so I imagine we would see a change here if he is our next manager. I could go on, but I haven't got the time or the will to do it. Basically, if AVB came to Spurs, he wouldn't have the problems he faced at Chelsea, as we are ready made to suit his style with the personnel we have. Only slight tweaks would need to be made, not wholesale changes which he tried to implement at Chelsea. We are much more like Porto than Chelsea, and I do think he would work as our manager. We'll see.
Also, on the back of that post by HIAG, I should point out that AVB had a better league record than Di Matteo last season.
Not playing the game for me is a huge issue and seldom few have succeeded without on the field knowledge and experience that only playing can give you. The massive difference between him and Mourinho as you point out is the Special One spent many, many years as an understudy to several high profile managers including Bobby Robson and Louis van Gaal learning the game before going it alone as a manager himself because he knew that it would take many years to really understand the game. A couple of seasons in Portugal does not make one ready for the Premier League IMO/ Again, based on what? I have read countless threads where Chelsea fans were screaming at AVB during matches they were either losing, drawing or ineffective and how he stuck with negative tactics and pulled the team further and further back. Tactically he looked inept last season. Chelsea at times were a shambles. Did you not watch the same season as the rest of us? Yes that's called "inexperience" and a lack of knowledge of the game. And how did he handle this situation? By treating seasoned, knowledgeable professionals with contempt. That shows arrogance and ignorance on a massive scale. A bad combination. So basically what you're saying is that as luck would have it, our squad looks nicely set up for this bloke because he hasn't got a clue how to pick or choose the correct players to play his system but luckily for us, the players we have should get him out of jail. Not by skill or by football knowledge but by sheer luck? Utter lunacy. Face it, AVB had one good season with a ready-made team, in his homeland of Portugal where he is familiar with the football culture and playing style, won the UEFA Cup (or whatever they call it these days) and thought he was good enough to take on the Premier League and failed. Now... let me think about this... who was the last Manager we got in who had one great season at a club in southern Europe, won the UEFA Cup, came to manage a Premier League team and made a right mess of it.... Hmmm.....?
That about sums it up. He may, in time, become a very good coach - may!! At the moment, he's a nobody with a grossly over hyped rep, IMO.
Maybe AVB should manage West Brom, so people can compare their respective records at two clubs? Makes it easier for us to bring in Moyes or Blanc...
