I've been around a bit longer than some of the posters on here (hence my monicker) and I, unfortunately have seen all this before.

For Lambert read Ron Saunders, John Bond, Mike Walker and Martin O'Neill. For Holty read Ron Davies, Hugh Curran, Ted MacDougall, Robert Fleck, Chris Sutton.

It's nothinh new - it hurts like hell at the time and things look grim, but, as ever, the club comes through it and we will get someone in who will keep things going. We must learn from the mistakes of the past though - for every Bond there's a Bryan Hamilton, for every Walker there's a Bruce Rioch, for every O'Neill there's a Peter the Pointer or Rodent. We can't be in that position again and must place our trust in McInally, Foulger, Bowkett and Delia to appoint the right man to get us out of this TEMPORARY mess.

I have to disagree with criticism of the club not allowing talks between Villa and Lambert. He is after all under contract so the club should not be forced into letting him leave. It is true it may have made things easier however there is no reason the club should have allowed this to happen. Sadly there is no loyalty and maybe even a lack of respect toward fans.

Thats half of what we paid for him let alone his contract etc He's easily worth £5mil plus already

I genuinely believe if all clubs took this stance it would be for the benefit of football. However this will never happen and while many clubs treat players/managers as gods finances/contracts etc in football will always be a problem

Serious question here! When was the last time we had a player/manager that left and went on to imrove his career?? Everyone who seems to leave either completely fades away or career ends early due to injuries!

Or maybe it is the catalyst for better times? Maybe we will find an even better manager and player. In reality it is hard to say until we have a new manager and see how he and the players do

Whelan gave Martinez the opportunity to talk to clubs interested in acquiring his services, and - as far as I know, he's decided against moving and is preparing for a new season with Wigan.

No major drama, panic, upheaval or gnashing of teeth!
So what's wrong with that type of arrangement from an NCFC perspective?

Lambert wants out and has probably wanted out for quite a while now, so what McNally did would have made no difference. As for Holt - get as much as we can and let him go and see the grass isn't always greener...

If it is an issue with his contract I think we need to get him a new contract. Losing Lambert is bad enough but losing both could be disastrous. The two biggest characters in the team could leave and we don't really have another leader amongst the pack.

dave whelan is a cunning man though. do you actually believe what he says? do you think martinez turned villa and liverpool down to stay at wigan? no, he didn't get either job in my opinion. i don't think his job will be the same now he's spent two weeks swanning about with important people form other clubs. the players will wonder when he's off. our club did the right thing in my opinion, even if it didn't work. let lambert make the decision whether he stays or not, not us. then you know how committed he is to the club.

we offered him what the club could afford and it wasn't enough. if that isn't enough for him then we have to sell him. we can't suddenly start making exceptions for players or the whole ethos of the club is broken

I can't imagine how anybody can blame the club. The players know the score. They blame the board to deflect from the sour taste it might leave when they move for more money.
Holt has his reasons. I don't care what they are and as long as he doesn't slag us off when he goes then I wish him Bon Voyage. If somebody gives him more than £850,000 a year then I think they are silly but thats their choice.
And we don't want to leave him to rot in the stiffs. He has a value and we should try and extract maximum from that value which is to sell him now.
