Had Jimmy Hill kept his mouth shut (instead of announcing the Sunderland score midway through the game, not at half time might I add, it was actually whilst the players were out on the pitch playing football) and had either Coventry or Bristol went on to win, Sunderland wouldn't have been relegated from division 1. The only result that could have relegated Sunderland on that last day of the season was a draw between Bristol and Coventry. Ironically Sunderland were beaten off Everton on that day too.
Today more than 30 years on. Sunderland are beaten off Everton and Bristol City and Coventry just so happen to be playing each other once again, both fighting relegation from the championship.
