If each car has to pit 3 times for tyres, thats over 80 pit stops per race, say a ten lap window every 20 laps or so, that equals a car into and out of the pits every 23 seconds on average during that window, It could be busy.

The front 10 will be pitting several laps earlier mind you, so there will be an off set of pit stops between the top 10 and the rest.

Tyre wear at Melbourne is lower than for most other circuits. For this reason, it is likely that other circuits will have significantly more stops than the predicted 80 (ish) we are likely to see on Sunday. But Melbourne's pit-lane is one of the narrower ones and there is certainly going to be a lot more action there than we've seen before.

As Ernie states, a direct consequence of the increased number of stops means that a driver's responsibility for his own result has shifted towards further reliance upon his team, who will find themselves under greater pressure than before.

For this reason, I will be keeping a watchful eye on all Mr. Lollipops and various other pit-release signals. With more potential for other cars at close quarter, there are likely to be a few marginal calls, so let's keep our fingers crossed that everything runs smoothly. (Unless it's someone you don't like of course).

With regards the P11 discussion, I guess P10 is just as good really, seeing as you could just get into Q3, and then not bother running (although you would be on the dirty side of the track)

Well, with qualifying as it is in modern day F1, P11 is really better than P10 (sometimes better than P9) because it allows far more flexibility with strategy.

does your Q3 time have to be within 107%?

Any driver whose best qualifying lap exceeds 107% of the fastest Q1 qualifying time will not be allowed to take part in the race.

Under exceptional circumstances, however, which may include setting a suitable lap time in a free practice session, the stewards may permit the car to start the race. Should there be more than one driver accepted in this manner, the grid order will be determined by the stewards.

seriously? what happens if it rains in FP1,2 & 3 Q1 & 2 but dries in Q3? that would mean the posibility of half the grid falling below the 107%

I think the 107% rule is solely used in Q1. I'm sure common sense will be used if all of practice was wet and a team was outside 107% in Q1

What I mean though, is that you could set an early, fast enough Q2 time, then ignore the rest of that session. Set the car to your desired race trim and refuel before the session ends, Q2 ends, and if you're time stayed in the top 10, you don't bother trying for Q3, and you get P10 and the set up you want. Admittedly, this relies on being able to set the car up as you desire within the window of Q2, but there will still be potential.

I think the Australian GP is likely to be the most eventful GP we have ever witnessed, some incidents not nesessarily good and as Bob says, qualy will not be an imporant feature regarding the outcome of the race, it appear the drivers influence upon the race result has been compromised.

Well, just how wrong I was
