I agree - although Barmby doesn't seem to fancy the Adebola types, Zoko would be a great mobile replacement for Adebola as a plan B from the bench.

De Laet is the man if he is indeed available on a free. I think he see's himself as a premier league player so would expect someone like Stoke to pick him up.

Can play anywhere across the back four

De Laet is a quality centre back and would be great to replace Hobbs untill he returns and even then challenge both him and Chester for a starting spot, but he is probaly on a large wage at United, if we got him on loan it would be good but you say he's on a free at the end of the season.

Can't see him being on more than the others by much - £5-6k? I'd check FM as they are pretty accurate with wages

FM is more accurate than Career Mode on FIFA 12, it says Kilbane is on 2K and Olofinjana is on 3K, if only that were true we could actually spend some money on a striker.

We could pick up Le Fondre from Rotherham for under £400k couldn't we?

I would assume the opposite and say that a new contract is formed whenever new terms/durations are agreed, otherwise any player that's with a club for a long time would be violating the rules about maximum contract lengths.

Our problem for 18 months has been that Plan A doesn't work anything like well enough, and still people think what we need is a Plan B for 20 minutes at the end of games.

When you get it right you get a bargain, but how easy is it to actually pick out the ones that can make it at this level from the ones that can't? I've not done it for a few years, but I looked before and there was a 5 or 6 year period where about 15 players had scored 20 goals or more in L1, and only 2 or 3 of them had gone on to score goals higher up. Windass was one, and we effectively had him on a try before you buy before we did the permanent deal. I think Lita was another, but it was slightly surprising both how many players had done it and how few of them had made the step up.

We didn't have cash to gamble with though. It's easy to say it now. Signing a L2 striker is a huge gamble that we simply couldn't afford to take.

Also LeFondre in our style of play would not work, he's a poacher who needs somebody to play off, we already have a very good striker in Fryatt who would score a lot more if he had somebody up alongside him. In the style Barmby wants us to ply he is going to have to find players that are a goal threat from wide areas and more of a contribution from midfield.

It was 800k I think, that's still cheaper than McLean.

PRISON WARNING FOR CARLISLE UTD PLAYER GARY MADINE AFTER HE ADMITS ASSAULT
    Published at 14:01, Tuesday, 28 September 2010
Carlisle United striker Gary Madine has been warned he could be sent to prison for knocking a man unconscious in a city pub.

    Gary Madine
Madine, who has just turned 20 years old, had previously pleaded not guilty to causing actual bodily harm to the man in The Beehive pub in Warwick Road on February 27.

But at the city’s Crown Court today he changed that plea to guilty.

The charge followed an incident in which the 6ft 3in striker punched and kicked Brian Mounsey, who is understood to be a Blues supporter.

After entering his plea, Madine, dressed in a black open neck shirt and black suit, was remanded on bail. Another hearing will have to be held to decide exactly what Madine did.

He claims he hit Mr Mounsey once as a ‘pre-emptive strike’ fearing he himself was going to be hit and that he kicked him gently to the body as he lay on the floor.

But witnesses say they saw him aiming a deliberate kick to his head.

Carlisle’s resident judge Paul Batty QC warned him that all options – including custody – would be open when he was sentenced, depending on what was decided at the next hearing.

Madine pleaded guilty on the basis that “in a mistaken belief that he was under attack he punched out once at Mr Mounsey in a pre-emptive strike, using excessive force.

“When Mr Mounsey fell to the floor Madine made a reactive kick to the body with minimal force which caused no injury.”

The court heard that some witnesses, including licensee Michael Wheatley and deputy general manager Sarah Mawson, told police they had seen Madine kick Mr Mounsey deliberately.

Mr Wheatley described a single kick to the head whereas Ms Mawson spoke of two kicks to the head “heavier than a tap.”

Judge Batty said: “This is a case where there ought to be a fact finding exercise as to the culpability of Mr Gary Madine, whether it was a pre-emptive strike as he describes it and whether or not he made a reactive kick to the body with minimal force.”

The judge said the result of that hearing next month would dictate what sort of sentence was imposed.

Madine, who comes from Birtley, Chester-le-Street, in County Durham, lives in Warwick Road, Carlisle.

Speaking after the hearing, United managing director John Nixon told the News & Star: “Gary will be travelling with the team for tonight’s match at Hartlepool. Whether or not he plays is solely a matter for the manager.”

He's not as bad as Ched Evans, who's in far more trouble.

Wasn't Madine in court for arson aswell most recently, at the start of the season I think, for some reason a few strikers are getting in trouble, Ched Evans for rape, Madine for assault and arson and Henderson for GBH.

Does anyone think we should try and sign that Grant Leadbitter on a free transfer, Boro and Cardiff are interested but he seems a good midfielder, a cross between Evans and Cairney, gets stuck in with his defensive qualities but can go up the pitch and spark a counter attack, he can shoot aswell if you remember...
