That may be OLM although I have not seen these published stats anywhere and I am unsure as to what year you refer to? The fact of the matter is, it is the property and not necessarily this current crop of vile individuals who generate this money for the country, how did they obtain the property in the first place? To me the property should be in the ownership of the country and an asset to the country and not to those people. Additionally when the lovely Liz dies will her family have to pay inheritance tax on the property left? No of course not - surely the Nil Rate Band (of ã325,000) should apply to her as well as it does to us 'plebs'? Then the country would receive Inheritance tax on the passing assets of 40% after this sum, subject to some other minor adjustments.
The buildings are unlikely to exist in their current form if the Royals weren't obliged to maintain them, plus a big part of the attraction is the history associated with them. We'd still need to pay for their security in the same way that former PM's and Presidents cost more than the ones in Office. The difference is that contrary to what you put, the Royals cost nothing and play their part in bringing in billions of pounds of income from trade and charity.
As for losing the priveliged position, I wouldn't swap my life for their goldfish bowl existence.
I didn't realise if we stopped having a monarchy now that all the history of us having one would automatically be erased. Interest in former leaders/ruling groups doesn't diminish just because they're no longer in that position, just look at how many books and documentaries are sold/shown about the Nazis. We haven't kept them around and yet there's more and more of it every year because people keep buying it.
Are you telling me that each of George Washington's descendants costs the US government more in security than Barack Obama? I'd take a short term hit in order to ensure long term we weren't burdened with them taking a huge cut of the revenue the estates generated.
Who actually gives a f*** about this royal wedding

If we went ahead with that attitude then where do you stop? Nobody owned any land to begin with. Should all our houses be seized and we would have to pay rent to the state? What would happen to the mortgages?

We also supported the Dutch king William of Oranje over the the king of England (mainly due to locals being outraged that the king of England wanted to cease trading with The Netherlands - the country Hull did most trade with) - and I believe that is why there is the gold statue of him on his horse, as he saved soo many businesses in the area due to over-throwing the king of England. The statue is also above a toilet - it's so we can say they're sat on the throne *buh-dum-tsh!*
But, pro-Royalist; we're the King's Town, founded by a king who picked this area to build his own town as a fort, to store the royal munitions and defend the kingdom. He did so after being left in awe at the sight of the Humber and river Hull meeting whilst travelling upstream.
...and to say Victoria got a rough job is wrong. Half the things in the city are named after her and Albert. Prince's dock, Victoria Pier, Queen Victoria Square, Queen's Gardens (which were filled in for her visit), Royal Station hotel - where she stayed ...she commisioned The Institute to be built (on Albion St - now the TownHouse boutique hotel) for her own personal physician and loved visiting the city. It was a prime example of a brilliant Victorian city and the reason 300 rail carriages of tourists from Wessie land visited per day in summer months! ...shame some nob called Adolf Hitler was born.
My family tree was traced back (before the internet too!) to the 14th Century in Middleton On The Wold, so happy to claim to be 100% English and 100% an East Ridinger![]()
BUT MAD DOG.....if you go back a bit further you would see you also come from a cross breed roman / viking relationship
royal wedding ...couldnt give a toss about it
will avoid watching the tv and the news...
dont give a hoot for royalty..
BUT I WOULD KEEP THEM, just to remind the yanks we have history
and they dont....
The amount of americans who THINK we are ruled by the queen is amazing....
they think she runs our country.....
My fave put down for gobby yanks is *oh please, we have pubs older than your country*, normally shuts them up!
Using that principle, we're all Africans, every single last one of us, which tbh makes me giggle especially when I think how some of the racists we have among us can't handle that!
