He's lost the plot now. If he actually thought about staying at Newcastle when we went down he could still be here and possibly be captain.

Do you ever watch the games? Guthrie has been class this season.

I heard about it but didn't see it. It's amazing how far he's fallen, from being on of our best players to that!

Guthrie on the ball is very good which is why he looked v good first half yday. Off the ball he isn't good enough to challenge Tiote and Cabaye imo so the best he can hope for is back up. Next year Abeid and Vuckic will be a year older and wiser so it may be a case Guthrie falls further down the pecking order. Can see why he may not want to sign

I still think Gosling will start playing well soon, I mean all the players we buy eventually come good. Guthrie provides experience and we need that

    I would love a Guthrie/Tiote/Cabaye midfield.

At the beginning of the season I would have been happy for Guthrie to go but he has impressed me this season. More please. <ok>

I've been impressed with Guthrie for a season or two. Will he get a chance against Tiote/Cabaye ? Is Abeid as good?

If he was to see a real career progression chance (eg eventual regular first team replacement to Danny Murphy @ Fulham) - he would be wise to go, rather than sit on NUFC bench.

I'd like that. I think Cabaye would score more goals if we had all 3 in the middle.

I hope he does sign a new contract. He's been class when he's played this season. He's got a good shot on him and hiss long cross field balls are impressive also.

I think he's a great back-up CM to have available, and plays a solid if not always spectacular looking (don't mean that as a criticism, just mean that he goes about his business) game. And if the youngsters do eventually catch up or surpass him, that's the time to cash in - not now when we don't know how they'll progress.

Guthrie has a good game in him and he's been solid as a rock for us. His work rate has been great and his distribution is perfect. He'll do for me.

Doesn't Guthrie earn relative peanuts? I've read it was somewhere in the region of £3k-£4k a week. Big bucks to us plebs but to a Premiership footballer, that's **** all.

I doubt that, its probably more like 10-15k a week. However if you are right that could be the problem with him signing a new contract here - he'd be asking for a big pay rise.

He is on a lot less than other players, though I think it's more than £3-4 k a week.

I was just going off something that was printed in the media a while back. Could be bollocks but it was apparently said in a court hearing. Probably got a salary boost upon return to the Premiership.

If he's putting in as good as, or better performances than other guys he's bound to want some kind of an improved salary. Wouldn't you?

Yes, think something similar happened with Milner, when he was on more than Guthrie but was still getting paid a fraction of what people like Barton and Smith were getting paid for never being fit.

Guthrie deserves a payrise and a new contract. Been our top performing CM this season i'd say.

I think he deserves 25k a week at least.

Agree, between £20k-£30k would be very fair.

I also like 'add-ons'in player contracts to give them an extra incentive such as a couple of grand goal / assist bonus.
