This is a bit niche….

In October 1905 City played Manchester United in the league and Denaby United in the FA Cup on the same day. A player called Carney played in the cup tie, his only first team appearance for the Tigers.

Records show his first name as Matthew, however I’ve seen little evidence for this. I’ve pieced together information from local newspapers at the time - he was a soldier at Beverley Barracks, his rank was Drummer, he was referred to as Mick - and I believe he was actually Michael William Carney, born in Beverley in 1879.

Agreed, both very good footballers. Paddy’s dad ( also Paddy ) used to run one of the Orchard Park United teams when I played for them, nice family.

Mally was off OPE as well I think?
I remember when Mally came to live in Hedon and worked shifts down Hedon Road so could only play 2 out of 3 games I was managing Hedon United at the time in Senior Amateur league and got him to sign for us. He had played aginst us for Schultz OB. He was a class player so cool under pressure and read games so well. I often wondered why he never made it as at the time he was far better than many who were full time pros at the time.

That’s a great description of Mally
Even as a kid he was like thst
Read the game so well and always in the right place to intercept

And ye how he didn’t make it I’ll never know
Quite a few other local lads who should have to.
