I have no idea what the plans are for it's development. I'd be interested to find out.

From what I can remember of the layout of the blocks, I don't see why it wouldn't be feasible to convert to affordable housing stock.
Hull University sold the Lawns to MCR Property Group who specialise in converting industrial buildings into accommodation. Whether this be proper apartments or bedsits I don't know. I believe the land that didn't have Ferens Hall and The Lawns on it was put back up for sale.

Yes, they were taking down the first of the three on Boothferry Estate today, its like a 60 year cycle, house should be built to last longer?
Practical refurbishment is very difficult in these buildings.
In 2010 two firemen Jim Shears and Alan Bannon died in Shirley Towers, a tower block. They were trapped by the wiring and pipework that had been installed as part of a refurbishment.
Grenfell Towers a tragic loss of 72 lives, were tenants safety concerns were ignored.
These buildings need replacing by safe homes.

It's Grade II* listed as an outstanding example of mid-century modernist design. I haven't seen it up close for years, so don't know what state it's in (mid-century concrete doesn't do well if it's not maintained) but it was award winning when it was built and needs to be preserved.

It also needs to be used however.

There's a parallel with a block of student accommodation near me in Newcastle: Henderson Hall which is also Grade II* listed. (The design isn't similar but the listed status and the situation is). It stood empty for years like The Lawns, then one night it mysteriously caught fire and was extensively damaged. Everyone then thought it would be torn down. But no. Newcastle University were ordered to rebuild it, which they are doing at great expense.

It was an unused University accommodation block. There are currently no firm plans for what to do with it when it's complete. The university website says 'Discussions about the future use of the building are continuing.'

I’m usually for protecting buildings and I’m sure that The Lawns is lovely. But I and I suspect most of the people of Hull have never even seen it.

There doesn’t seem to be much point in protecting buildings that haven’t been particularly visible to the wider population. I don’t think many will miss it.

I agree, while all this time the Lord Line building, which actually means a lot to Hull and it's population is left to rot.

Grade II listed status is dependent on a building having specific architectural or historical interest. It has nothing to do with how many people have seen it or not.

Is listed status ever reviewed? Once granted can it be reversed? I wonder who nominated Lawns for listed status? The more I think about it the more murky it seems to be, jobs for the boys and all that, unelected bodies deciding what's good for us.
But there again I always did like a good conspiracy... :bandit:

Hull City's Edwardian Spion Kop terrace has been left to rot under the brambles a lot longer than the Lord Line and should be listed and saved first!

I agree with most of the responses you’ve already had, but to actually answer your question round here at present you’re talking c£10K an acre for farmland that doesn’t have much prospect of being granted planning approval for much else. That very much doesn’t include The Lawns, which is begging to be developed.
