Roy Keane on Turkey losing 2-0 to Australia national soccer team in their World Cup opener:

️ “I don't want to hear excuses. Before the match, everyone was talking about Turkey as if the three points were already in the bag. Well, football doesn't care about predictions.

Australia looked like a team playing for their lives. Turkey looked like a team waiting for something to happen. That's the difference. One side competed, the other side expected.

What annoys me most is the attitude. You can forgive mistakes. You can forgive missed chances. But you cannot forgive a lack of urgency at a World Cup.

Australia won the physical battle, the mental battle, and in key moments they won the football battle too. That's embarrassing if you're Turkey because they were supposed to be the team making the statement tonight.

Some players will look at the tactics, some will blame luck, and some will point fingers elsewhere. Nonsense. Start by looking in the mirror. World Cups are not won by talent alone.

The harsh reality is this: Australia arrived believing they could win. Turkey arrived believing they should win. One mindset creates history. The other creates headlines like this.”

Keane does get himself a bit carried away at times …

… talk about the football Roy, leave managing to people who can manage.

Wasn't impressed with Brazil last night, Morocco were good but I think Vini junior papered over the cracks for Brazil. I think overall Morocco edged it and possibly deserved to win, especially if they had a bit more of a cutting edge. Brazil will have to step up a lot in my opinion. Brazil actually reminded me of the 1990 Brazil team, which had the likes of Careca, Muller, Dunga, Branco, Jorginho and Romario in it. A lot of quality in the squad but something "off", if they don't improve I can see them going out earlier than expected. I'd not be surprised to see Morocco top the group after last night.

Switzerland were disappointing, loads of possession and shots but other than a save from Xhaka the Qatari keeper didn't make many top class saves. I don't know whether it was a case of complacency or a lack of a cutting edge, but against a team as weak as Qatar you'd expect more from the Swiss. They're another team that need to step up a lot or won't do much in the tournament. They're lucky it's such a weak group (the group has been nicknamed the group of life) or they could be in real trouble.

I stayed up and watched Scotland and they made hard work of it. They winning goal was probably going to be saved until the Haitian defender trying to block it toe deflected it up and away from the keeper. Other than that and hitting the post in the first half, Scotland never really looked like scoring again. Gannon Doak was good and always looked a threat but they never really tested the Haiti keeper. Both teams only had 2 shots on target but Haiti actually had more shots overall and were definitely pushing more in the later stages. It was a very even game and if Haiti has equalised you'd not complain about it. Haiti weren't great themselves, though. Both Isador and the other forward spent too much time going down easily looking for penalties, which must have been a managerial tactic, as a few others went down easily in attacking positions. Haiti also made some poor choices when attacking out wide, by either running into trouble holding onto the ball too long or poor passes in the final third and had a lot of disappointing set pieces. That said Haiti were closer to scoring in the second half than Scotland. The header late on, Isador was about a yard away from getting on the end of a cross at the back post. Mcginn had a chance he screwed up but otherwise Haiti were the better team second half. Scotland have to be better in their next 2 games but oddly if they can be better they might fancy their chances of getting something from Brazil if they don't improve from their showing last night. Morocco will be tough in the next game, though so they need to be much better. The win probably puts them into the knockout stages unless they loose the next 2 games pretty heavily.

I've not watched Australia - Turkey but I'm not surprised Australia won. Turkey were in a very weak qualifying group that Spain won at a canter and had probably the easiest knockout path. They also seem to be poor travellers and when not on their game are capable of collapsing when up against it. Australia were always going to fight hard and if Turkey weren't on their game Australia are the kind of team that would exploit that. The result probably gives Paraguay some hope of trying to get a 3rd place spot in the next game, both will probably have to go out to win to stand a chance.

I wonder what the Brazil score line would have been without the first half ad break,?

Brazil were all over the place and visibly lost. They might well have been out of it had not the ad breaks been brought in, without consultation of course, by FIFA. It gave Ancelotti a chance to sort a couple of things out and they were better after it.

I know, it was hot enough at that game, but that's not what FIFA brought them in for. It was all about money for FIFA

IMO, if they are going to have these drinks breaks, the players should go to the centre circle and drink from bottles brought on the pitch for a couple of minutes. No talking to coaches, and the same when a player is down " injured".

I remember the 1986 world cup in Mexico. It was as hot as this tournament but they didn't have a "hydration break" midway through a half. They just brought on drinks bags when there was a convenient break, like a free kick or a substitution. It didn't take up much time and kept the game flowing. This feels more like a time out put in for ad breaks.

When I was watching the Brazil game today, Guy Mowbray said he heard the American commentator saying that it was the end of the first quarter when they went for the break - he didn't sound that impressed by it all

Apart from the daft kick off times but that’s only natural considering which continent it’s on

I’ve really enjoyed it so

'murica was trying all ways to get a 'four quarters' game the last time, seem to remember they also wanted bigger goals, no draws and a couple of rule changes.

hydration break should be in their own penalty area with the drinks brought in by opposition staff

I hope they tipped the people that gave them their hydration, then tipped the people that brought the hydration to the stadium and tipped the bloke that opened the gate for them. Then once the hydration vessel was empty, tipped the bloke thar took it away for them.

Ad breaks are exactly what they are.
