So,let's say for interests sake and purely hypothetically,if Spain and France or Spain and Brazil were drawn to face each other in a quarter or semi final.

You wouldn't watch it?

Not aimed at you personally, but I think there's an element of people cutting off their noses to spite their faces here and I find it bizarre that politics(and the politics of the USA specifically)is turning people off a football tournament that is normally number one on the list for football fans.
Like 2 wrights probably not. It's not the politics putting me off it the time of the matches (its an hour later for me than you too). I'll watch the England games and the Sweden games kicking off before midnight. But with work in the morning I'll probably not watch many others.

FWIW I was in Florida last week and the only place that had anything world cup related was MIA where they had a couple of signs welcoming people for the event.

A good statement from Ruud Gullit

I have stayed quiet for a long time because I wanted to judge this World Cup on football matters. But the deeper we get into the preparations, the more it becomes clear that football is no longer the main story. For that reason, I believe Gianni Infantino should seriously consider stepping down as FIFA President.

A World Cup should unite people. Instead, this tournament is becoming a symbol of division, political disputes, travel restrictions, and administrative failures. We are hearing reports that Iranian supporters have had their ticket allocations withdrawn.

We have seen the case of Somali referee Omar Artan, selected by FIFA on merit to officiate at the highest level, yet reportedly denied entry into the host country. These are not minor issues. They strike at the heart of what the World Cup is supposed to represent.

FIFA cannot continue promoting football as a universal game while qualified supporters, officials, and participants face barriers that appear unrelated to football itself. The organisation's first responsibility is to protect the integrity and accessibility of the competition.

What concerns me most is that these problems were foreseeable. FIFA awarded the tournament, FIFA approved the arrangements, and FIFA repeatedly assured the football world that everyone would be welcomed. If those assurances are proving unreliable, then accountability must start at the very top.

Leadership is not about appearing in photographs with politicians or celebrating commercial success. Leadership is about taking responsibility when things go wrong. That is why I believe Mr Infantino must ask himself whether he is still the right person to lead world football.

The rising cost of attending matches is another serious concern. Many loyal supporters who follow their countries through qualification campaigns can no longer afford to attend the tournament. Football risks becoming an exclusive event for corporations and wealthy spectators rather than the ordinary fans who built the game.

The World Cup belongs to the world, not to governments, political interests, or football administrators. It belongs to the players, the referees, and the supporters.

If FIFA cannot guarantee that all three are treated fairly and equally, then it has failed in its most fundamental duty. The football world deserves answers, accountability, and leadership. If those cannot be provided under the current administration, then perhaps the time has come for new leadership at FIFA."

Unless I happen to be in the pub when a game is on, I doubt I'll watch any games at all. I don't really like international football, not interested, and that includes England.
This....fell out of love with int football years ago, really not that arsed about England now, kids are but at 9 and 12 they aren't going to be allowed to stay up to watch the really late games (by mum not me....). As for the tournament in general the heat combined with the absolute plethora of **** teams that now qualify for a 48 team world cup, plus 3 teams qualifying from most groups tends to result in REALLY **** football, dull uninspiring negative ****.....and I really can't be arsed to watch that. In the example given, yeah of course I'd turn on to watch Spain Brazil at later stages, indeed most later stages, but the first 2 weeks are a write off.

I get that 100%.Some of the kick-off times are of no use to man nor beast.

It's not convenient for the working person in the U.K or Europe.

I'm not bothered about the politics per se, especially American politics, but barring participants from entering just seems a bit off to me. Apart from that it's more just the timings for me.
I don't agree with people being refused entry either, especially players and officials and this should've been considered when the World Cup venue was handed out.

America is extremely picky on who they allow into their Country(which isn't necessarily a bad thing) but it's been a bad idea to give them it because of that and realistically problems were bound to arise?

I'll watch what I can in terms of interesting games but even I,as someone who doesn't work, can't envisage sitting up until 4 in the morning to watch a 'nothing' game in the group stages. As the tournament progresses the kick off times become a bit more palatable to the working man/woman but are also dependant on his/her shift patterns.

this world cup has a last 1/16 which is silly, 32 teams making it out of the groups is bonkers
so really the world cup doesnt get exciting until the last 1/8

making it so many teams is just silly, and like you said, i think almost all the knockout games will be more watchable for us europeans

I think my plan is 'tape' all the games at silly times and watch as if live in the morning. One of the advantages of being retired. I am lining them all up.

Can get up for this work cup. Hosts not being good hosts, expected USA/FIFA financial rip off and lots of noise around the world in general. Going to tune in but as and when.
On another note currently watching Dear England on the box. Much better than I expected showing Southgate’s thinking from day one and how he was the right man to change things. Certainly should have nailed the Euros in 2021. Also gives a good insight into the absolute pressure of being at the top and how it effects players.

I've just worked out that there's 8 more group games this year than the total number of games played in Qatar.

And there 40 more group games than the total number when the competition was played in this country, 60 years ago.

I really need to crack on with my day.

Was ruud asking for Russia to be allowed to play in past euros and world cups?

The US are at war with Iran they’re hardly going to welcome them

It's not about Iran, in fact, ironically the US is now putting in a plan to at least allow Iranian tickets to be sold to Iranians living in the US.

They're not letting in officials, fans and journalists from all sorts of random countries, including Scotland ffs.

What the bit where he says about Iran isn’t about Iran?
