City win?

  • City

  • Draw

  • Norwich

Results are only viewable after voting.
But that’s the same for Wrexham, except they just need to match our result vs a tougher opponent instead of better it by one goal.
Exactly, so it isn't in our hands and it isn't in theirs either.

In our hands means that a situation is under our direct control.

Direct being the critical bit.

It’s in no-one’s hands, but who are the favourites to win their game? It has to be Derby. They are in the best form with the easiest game.

If either us or Wrexham win then no result Derby achieve will see them move into sixth.

It's not in their hands.

They're relying on both us and Wrexham not winning,

So, 10 minutes to go, both us and Wrexham are winning 3 nil.

Serj is on the touchline shouting at the players 'you need another goal - three nil is not good enough. It's in your hands, lads'.

Haha I went through this on twitter when baz said it was in our hands pre Charlton despite us being 7th. People saying "we just have to win by more than Wrexham so we know what we need to do it's in our hands" but if Wrexham score last minute..?

I hope that can be us for once. We see every other team have these grandstand finales at both ends of the table in each division every season but it never happens to us.

But by that definition, surely a Wrexham fan will say the exact same thing. It is in their hands as what result could Hull City achieve that would render it impossible for them?

Therefore, your logic is flawed as two teams both can't be equally in control of their own destiny when only one team can achieve the desired outcome.
In a cup final two teams have it in their hands to win the game, but both can’t win.
On Saturday whichever team gets the biggest win between city and Wrexham will finish in the play offs, so it’s in both teams gift to gain the biggest win. If neither win then obviously Derby can overtake both, but they are relying on both of us. So it’s in the hands of both City and Wrexham

I guess you'd say last season staying up on GD after starting the day in the relegation zone is pretty close?

It absolutely is in our hands. Also in Wrexham's. Both sides just need to win by enough. Whichever one of us misses out just didn't win by enough. Neither of us needs a favour from the other, we just have to outwin the other. If Wrexham win 10-0 we just need to win by 11. That's in our hands. (And in theirs).

Very different when it's a single game so you can control how many goals your opponent can score. We can't control Wrexham scoring the same number of goals as us. The only time it comes into our hands would be like in 2012 if we had 15 minutes extra time added on the end to score knowing exactly what we needed to do.

So we go into added time knowing one more goal puts us ahead of Wrexham, we score, pandemonium. Word filters through Wrexham have also scored. How have we been able to control that?

I also don't know why people get so hung up on this. Is it the ignominy of getting the play offs because another side was worse than us? Ever since Baz used that phrasing last week ahead of Charlton people have been at pains to insist it's in our hands. It's not. But who cares? We just have to win and hope it falls our way. Getting too hung up on what Wrexham do will just see us draw or lose because we're too distracted.

We lost against Man Utd but stayed up in 2009 because Newcastle were worse than us. If we'd won, they couldn't have stayed up - that was in our hands. We didn't win but we still stayed up. Does that make that achievement any less special?

If we beat norwich
Theres a risk the players need to stay for another 2 weeks+ instead of partying

Blimey, talk about glass half empty!

Lie back, close your eyes and imagine...

10 to 5 Saturday afternoon, ref blows the final whistle, City with a scrappy but hard-fought win 1-0, courtesy of a Gelhardt header off the keeper's arse.

That puts Derby out of the frame.

Wrexham are all square with M'boro, 4 mins of added time to go...

Feel the tension rising?

2 mins to go, M'boro on the break down the right, Whittaker puts the ball on the penalty spot, Strelec header...

Off the foot of the post. Bollocks!

Now Longman picks up the loose ball, hoofs it forward to Windass, bearing down on the keeper...

Excited yet? Eyes shut behind the settee?

Windass chips the keeper from the edge of the 18yd box, off the crossbar!

Ref blows time, we're in the playoffs :emoticon-0102-bigsm :emoticon-0102-bigsm :emoticon-0102-bigsm :emoticon-0102-bigsm :emoticon-0102-bigsm

Any better now?
Shame kick off is 12 30

It was hardly a grandstand finale, it was ****ing ****e. Didn’t we lose?

It was 1-1. I guess I'm more thinking final days as a totality - entering in a 'doomed' position and emerging successfully. Closest we've been that I can think of to a grand stand finale that we benefitted from was Leeds scoring against Watford for us.

I was about to mention that, even that was ****e. I remember standing there for about 5 minutes that felt more like 5 hours waiting for the result and then relief more than anything. Would be nice to be the team that gets the injury time goal that turns everything on its head for a change.

If that happens then we didn't score enough. We could always have scored more and that is in our hands. Knowledge of what Wrexham do or when they do it is irrelevant.
