I was reading an article somewhile back and it seemed to suggest shoplifting got worse the more self checkouts were rolled out. And some supermarkets were considering reversing the trend of self service because it had become such a big problem.
Some accountant would have worked out that shoplifting is cheaper than employing check out staff.
