Stopped watching sci fi rubbish when I was about 10. Think it was when I realised that the Daleks could never rule the world because they came unstuck when trying to get up and down the stairs.

If you'd have carried on watching TT you'd have discovered that they solved that problem.

If they say ELEVATE they are able to hover. :1980_boogie_down:

Adjusted for inflation only Gone With the Wind grossed more. It was definitely not weird and niche at the time.

Interesting. Don’t know where I read that it wasn’t as popular at the time and only gained widespread popularity after the other two films in the trilogy came out.

Didn’t Alec Guinness dislike it though? I remember also reading that he hated how it overshadowed his more ‘serious’ roles as an actor and got sick of kids calling him Ben Kenobi lmao.

As someone who was there at the time I’d say A New Hope was reasonably popular with school kids. If you’d gone to see it as an adult other than escorting your children you’d have been laughed at / treated with suspicion.

The Empire Strikes Back is the first film I remember queuing round the block for, but the demographic of that queue again was 100% that of a kids’ film. The Return of the Jedi being a bit of a damp squib probably would have finished the franchise as an artistic endeavour, barring the ongoing popularity of the toys. EVERYONE collected the action figures.

It was only when that generation grew up and got the money to start collecting them again that interest was rekindled, the films were remastered, the new films were made and for me it was only then that people started to apply some sort of adult intent to the first three retrospectively.

Edit - just to add The Empire Strikes Back was taken a bit more seriously at the time, but only in a ‘surprisingly good for a kids’ film’ way

Yeah, I think this is what I read. A New Hope was considered some silly flick for young lads but wasn’t considered ‘serious cinema’ until a bit later.

there was also Dorchester down George Street, next to Carmichaels
Ahhh Dorchester, lovely memories of that place. First time a lass gave me one off the wrist, we was below legal age. Can never remember the film though, don't know why. I remember it was a U though.

So why not shut this thread and move the last 3 pages to a movie thread?
Yeah, come on mods, sort it out (instead of joining in). Or maybe I'll just start posting some 'concerned citizen's aka far right fascist stuff along with some religion = fairy tales stuff to get the thread closed?
Seriously though, why aren't mods keeping this thread related to our transfer business - not necessary to close it as some might still want to post about our done business. It's a tad annoying when you come on here to check football / transfer related stuff but have to wade through all this other stuff, especially when there's already other threads for it.

Well there is a link because there is a strong link between Star Wars geeks and far right ideology. It’s thought to be the consequence of extreme bullying in their youths, which makes sense.

Pride myself in never seeing any Star Wars films or Game of Thrones, or Harry Potter come to think of it.
Same with James Bond, never watched one, even on the telly.
But I can watch Zulu, Kes, Deerhunter, Taxi Driver and Papillon time after time and still enjoy them.

Never understand comments like this

You pride yourself on being ignorant to other things

Charlie Chaplin's, The Great Dictator?
I'm not a fan of sci -fi, and have never seen any of the Stars Wars films, each to their own though. :emoticon-0138-think
