I’ll count it when it counts on the league table. Yesterday the team played having trained in the morning (which is a bold method), I won’t judge the players we are currently watching on how they do it as they’ll likely not even be playing. Donny handled it yesterday by simply being stronger and more experienced not because of the way we were playing. We’d get the ball past their press plenty of times but Sandat and Vaughan just kept losing it Fenerbache for 40 minutes couldn’t get a grip of the game, then we faded. Once fresh legs were introduced again we looked miles better and created a few chances we should’ve scored from like yesterday.
Which begs the question, what has he been mis-sold? What gave him the confidence in taking the job that he now feels let down by? Are the finances worse than he was told? Are we just struggling to convince people to come? Are the club just not trying hard enough? Hard to believe that'd be the case. So what's changed?
I just think it’s the lax approach we’ve seen the last 2 summers now. Rosenior had a much more stable base to build from so wasn’t as much of a concern but the speed at which our board do business is consistently slow. You’d have thought it would’ve changed this summer but clearly not. I think Acun’s impatience shines through, he’d much rather wait to sign a higher quality player that’ll be better (and usually more expensive) for us to be better now then signing say someone who needs developing sooner.
I’m not suggesting they won’t figure it out. But at the start of the season they will be learning as they go, that can’t be anything other than an advantage to us?
Not irrelevant at all, a bunch of kids who are terrified to pass forward and getting outmuscled and play the system compared to when our senior players played against Fenerbache in the first 40 mins. Nearly every system wouldn't work against full time pro's when using 17 year olds with it.
We'll see but I won't be counting on early success just because we have a new style. Think that's wishful thinking.
I think they’ve picked it up pretty well so far. 2 and a half more weeks of learning it to go for the current lads. Add a few more to it over those weeks it could be ok come GW1 not holding my breath though, but won’t be judging the style until I feel he’s happy with the squad level. I genuinely see him resigning if he’s shafted come the end of the window
Not saying it won't be happening but your point was because it had been "countered" in the 2 friendly games but its comparing apples with oranges, until we see our first team doing it (whenever that is).
I'm quite frankly bored of it all and the whole discussion and am just going to turn up on the 10th and see what happens
Some of the feedback from Germany regarding Tims style was that teams found it difficult to figure out and deal with so I think it's reasonable to think that would be the case again. Whether or not we can perform to the levels required to carry it out and capitalise will remain to be seen.
Isn't though is it, the first 40 mins of Fenerbache when we had senior players out and weren't shattered from a vigorous training camp we dominated them.
Hull City and Cardiff City are reportedly interested in signing Leicester City winger Kasey McAteer. According to journalist Darren Witcoop, the Tigers and the Bluebirds want to sign McAteer on a season-long loan ahead of the 2024/25 Championship season. McAtee registered for the Foxes last night as they recorded a 2-1 win over Shrewsbury Town in their first public match under new boss Steve Cooper. It remains to be seen whether McAtee will be part of Cooper's long term plans as they prepare for the Premier League campaign.
You could clearly see signs of Donny struggling with it in parts, they just had the added benefit of a few of our younger lads looking like competition winners
That's exactly what I took from the performance, the younger boys were just bulled off the ball too often and didn't have the physicality to cope. You often see the difference in academy teams playing in mens lower division teams in this Bristol Street motor Trophy's, more often than not the men's side come out on top.
It's hard to judge Walters style in pre-season games because during the season there are different expectations from both us and the opposition. When we're away from home there will be a need from the away team to press/on the front foot. If we break the press there should be space. What was evident last night is the confidence from the younger players that once you've broken the first line (usually with a CB in midfield) the ball almost certainly has to go forward, that will come with confidence and experience, both were lacking last night with the younger team. Once you've broken the first press your CBs are out of position, you then need to make a couple of forward passes to relieve the pressure on the defence/GK, allow everyone to step up and slide across to fill the gaps. If you pass back to early or get caught, players could be out of position and there will be lots of space. Grant went man for man like he did against Rosie and it worked against an inexperienced team The Fenerbahce game was more a home game due to their shape. What we saw against Fenerbahce was for the most part a competent display of the style of play. We played well, even against a low block that would have stifled us last season too. The problem against Fenerbahce was actual threat in the box. We had no end product so had to keep recycling it, the more you recycle it the more likely a quality team like Fenerbahce will win the ball, break with quality and score. We will be vulnerable to teams that break with speed from their own half like Fener did but, the idea is that you have better quality across the front 3 which will mean will be a tad more cautious in their set up, or ideally we score or create a chance that leads to a corner or GK. With the CBs setting up and the need to break down counter attacks you can see the importance of a traditional DM. Other plus points; Simons and Fleming, although not starters have shown enough to play a part. Fleming has played some good forward balls and his movement seems to be what Walter wants. Flemings resurgence means I current feel quite comfortable at LB, with Jacob, Fleming and Giles as options. This gives us the option to push Giles further forward and still have the option of an attacking or defence minded LB. Simons has looked good and will improve by playing with the starting 11.
