Thing is
By the letter of football rules
It was a penalty
That happens in middle of the pitch
Its a freekick 100% of the time
And any foul inside the penalty box
Is a penalty
Theres no nuances about where on the pitch and its severity
It seems harsh due to it being a penalty
But a foul is a foul
It exposes the problem with VAR yet again. For decades football has had a ruleset that doesn't really work if applied 100% strictly, but has been made to work in part because of the application of common sense by referees to avoid the game being a farce. As the cliché goes, you could give 10 penalties a game if you wanted to, but referees generally avoid doing so, and deliberately set the bar high for a foul in the area for the sake of keeping the game pure. But VAR has been implemented in the game without enough care for this long-established nuance, and is sometimes used to pore over incidents in detail using the strictest application of the laws and then make huge game-changing judgements.
Not that I'm complaining in this instance.
