Still think we should try to get Di’Shon Bernard back if he rejects a new contract at Sheffield Wednesday. The way he plays makes me think he’d suit Walter’s football and how he wants his centre-backs to play.
And can even play as a defensive mid. Walter seems to like his centre-backs carrying the ball forward into midfield areas due to the goalkeeper being so far up the pitch in possession. I thought Bernard excelled at that even when he was on loan with us and thought he’d make a better defensive mid than centre-half in his career. He’s quite good on the ball if not a bit overzealous out of possession. Jones is more of a composed centre-half who doesn’t really step up or man-mark, nor dive into tackles.
If Greaves goes I think Ronnie Edwards will be the obvious replacement; in terms of value for money and potential ability, as well as playing style, he'd be perfect and the fee Peterborough want wouldn't be out of reach if Greaves were to go. That being said, Greaves going could take a while and if other clubs get their **** together, we could well miss out. Another former P'boro man, Frankie Kent, has had a great season at Hearts and could be another option.
Bernard, in my mind, would not necessarily be a direct Greaves replacement but someone to compete with Jones for the right-sided centre-back spot. I still think we need depth regardless of Greaves going or not as the only clear depth for Jones is Andy Smith who hasn’t done great on loan this year despite being good at Grimsby. I would like to see a like-for-like replacement for Greaves as much as possible. Left-footed would be ideal but not an absolute requirement, good on the ball, good in the air, good positioning but also aggressive in stepping up high to win the ball. Anselmo García MacNulty would be my suggestion. Currently plays for PEC Zwolle in Eredivisie, very highly-rated, is left-footed and can also play left-back, Ireland u21 and lots of Irish fans can’t believe he hasn’t been called up to the senior squad yet. Would cost a fraction of what we’d get for Greaves too. Other suggestions would be Ronnie Edwards, like you said, but I think Peterborough will demand something stupid like £8 million for him. Cashin is probably out of the question after signing a new deal at Derby not long ago and they got promoted. Clarke-Salter is another option but QPR might demand £6-8 million for him even.
Maybe, but as a League One club I don't think they have any chance of getting that. £4m I reckon would get him, with add ons if we get promoted maybe. I think you're right on JCS, QPR historically don't accept low money for their players. Speaking of, I'd quite like Ilias Chair as an AM (assuming he isn't going to prison), if only because it would stop him having a stormer against us every time QPR rock up. He's consistently been one of the best attacking midfielders in the league, he is probably a bit of a dickhead but I think the way he plays is something we were massively lacking last season.
In an ideal world, perhaps. We didn't seem to have any issues of that nature when signing Mallik Wilks.
Where would YOU draw the line? Do you have a line? Would you have us sign a Ched Evans? a Mason Greenwood (theoretically)?
Wasn't Ched Evans acquitted? I mean Preston, Chesterfield and Fleetwood didn't seem to have any qualms about signing him. I wouldn't because I think he's **** and Mason Greenwood (who had all charges dropped) wouldn't come here anyway. If it was somebody like Adam Johnson, who absolutely was found guilty and is now in prison, no, I wouldn't sign him. Quite a lot of footballers do **** outside of football, I judge players by their ability on the pitch. I judge people based on their actions in everyday life. So Ilias Chair is a fantastic footballer but a complete dickhead outside of football. As I don't have to experience him outside of football, I'd take him if he wasn't going to end up in prison. It's probably looking like he's going to end up in jail anyway, so it's moot, but I wouldn't have any problem signing him. QPR don't have any issues playing him either.
So youd be fine signing greenwood? Personally i want the players who pull on our teams shirts not to be scum Otherwise i wouldnt cheer
His offence came after he played for us, he is actually a very talented footballer, but a very, very troubled man and I hope he gets the help he needs. Mental health-wise, he's really not in a good place.
