The club should really go for this. The experience Henderson has, work ethic and knowledge of the club make him ideal to bring in not just a a player, but to bring through as a coach. You don’t get to be Liverpool and England captain without being an exceptional leader. He seems intelligent, has worked through adversity at Liverpool when he arrived to become a success. Offer him the right combination of deal, opportunity and chance to be back home I think there is a possibility. Even f he becomes our highest paid player it shouldn’t break the wage structure, I can see the conversation with Speakman now… “so Pierre you want wages to match Jordan. Let’s do that and we’ll do it by structuring in automatic rises when you play in the premier League, get your first international cap, become captain of your country, play in Europe, win the Premier League and lastly win your first European trophy. Just sign here, oh it does mean a 10% wage cut in the short term but I’m sure you’ll see the immense opportunity linked to your growth and development.”
I've seen a few ex players who say Henderson will play for us before he hangs his boots up. The biggest bonus would be his influence on the academy lads looking to break through. I know we all want our business done early, but I can't see it happening due to the Euros being played this summer.
Not impressed by his Saudi sojourn but he seemed to learn his lesson quickly. If he is achievable as a signing we’d be absolutely mad not to. A significant step up in quality if he’s anywhere near his best and one of the most experienced captains in the world.
Completely agree that people make mistakes and should be allowed to own them and move on. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were legal / contractual limitations limiting what he can now say so I wouldn’t be expecting any grand expression of regret. Suspect there will be some who struggle to accept this. Just hope if there is a chance of him returning he doesn’t get put off by being trolled.
Just think there's worse players than he is right now getting a lot of minutes in midfield for top half PL teams. If he was keen and his wage demands are doable then yes, would even offer him some coaching role if he's interested in that side of the game.
100% agree mate, I think if we’re getting a defensive midfielder it’s more likely to be the Korean lad from Birmingham, football romance very rarely works out anyway
All depends on when he feels he wants to hang up his boots. If he's looking to do it next summer then this season is his last chance to play for us. Helping Sunderland back to the Prem would mean the world to him, kinda like Leadbitter dropping down from the Championship to L1. I agree it's unlikely.
A return to Liverpool is less likely with Klopp away, wouldn’t be hugely surprised if he joins him in his new job. Someone who can operate at the heart of the team who knows the head coaches ideas and how to implement them. Damn it, looks like we need to go for Klopp too. Think I was getting a little carried away with nostalgia for a while there.
Klopp or not Liverpool wouldn't touch him with a ****ty stick at this point. I'd be highly surprised if Klopp went near him in a new role given the calibre of club he'd go to. Liverpool didn't want to give him reassurances over playing time 12 months ago. And he's had one of the worst individual seasons in living memory. He's played a few friendlies in the sand in a team that played really poorly and he's really struggled in a poor Ajax team to the point where it's being reported that they're looking to dump him. Not going into all of the moral considerations, the guys footballing stock has plummeted. I'd put money on him ending up at West Ham, Everton or the like.
This is a guy who vocally stood up for gay rights and then arguably ended his career to take money from a state that openly executes gay people. Crossing an arbitrary line from red to blue kind of pales in significance to that. Pretty sure Jordan Henderson would go to Everton or to Newcastle if it made sense for Jordan Henderson.
Pretty terrifying if the Saudi move was palatable to him but a move to Everton or Newcastle would some how go against his principles. Strange world we live in.
And since then has took a huge wage from Saudi and played for a huge European club. Even if we offered him a wage above our wage structure, it'll be nowhere near what he could earn by just going to Wolves or something.
