On the day he was unveiled as new Cardiff City manager, one of the Bluebirds hierarchy described Erol Bulut as something of a wildcard.

Regardless of the contract poker playing out over Bulut’s future, it is safe to say Cardiff’s hired hand has provided returns.

In fact, as he approaches his 50th game in the Cardiff dug-out with this weekend’s final day of the season trip to relegated Rotherham United, Bulut can lay claim to already being one of the Bluebirds’ best bosses in recent times when it comes to wins.

Currently, the former Fenerbahce man can boast a 40.8% win ratio in charge thanks to 20 victories from 49 games in all competitions.

That is better than any of his five immediate predecessors who have held the position since Neil Warnock’s time as manager.

Even then, serial promotion winner Warnock’s win ratio was only slightly better at 40.97%.

And a win at the New York Stadium on Saturday would lift Bulut up to 42% - the best since Malky Mackay’s 43.2% during a period where the club reached the play-offs, a League Cup final and secured the Championship title.

If no new deal is agreed to extend Bulut's services, that is not a bad way to bow out.

There is a caveat, of course, in that Warnock’s record includes a season in the Premier League.

But Bulut’s 19 Championship wins is still the most in a campaign since the veteran Yorkshireman took the club to the top flight in 2018, when a superb season saw 27 victories celebrated.

Conversely, there have been 21 defeats this season – only one shy of last year’s struggle for second-tier survival – with Cardiff only drawing five games all term. Only promoted Leicester City have drawn fewer.

But given one of the attributes chairman Mehmet Dalman cited when explaining Bulut’s appointment was his knowledge of how to win games; the statistics show he has done just that.

Cardiff manager win ratios since 2013:
      • Malky Mackay – 43.2%

      • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – 30%

      • Russell Slade – 37.21%

      • Paul Trollope – 16.67%

      • Neil Warnock – 40.97%

      • Neil Harris – 38.71%

      • Mick McCarthy – 36.84%

      • Steve Morison – 35.56%

      • Mark Hudson – 22.22%

      • Sabri Lamouchi – 33.33%

      • Erol Bulut – 40.8%

City may have so many games this season but save Huddersfield away without any real comfort or attacking flair.

    Excellent research and stats.
I still maintain that the guy could do no more than fulfil his brief (no Maskey) ie to keep our Championship status. A brief he met and surpassed with flying colours. Many will question his methods and that he had luck along the way. We still don't know what his preferred style is but there's no arguing with the numbers. I firmly believe that if he surpassed targets with the current squad then there's every chance he can make a successful impact on introducing a more attractive game. Of course, this will largely depend on VT and his footballing nous <doh>
Time for some stability and for Vince to decide if he wants to progress the club. My fear is that he's more interested in the real estate rather than the football. But that's a different discussion.

I thought the same. If he goes, he goes and probably Goutas and Siopis as well.

While Cardiff is one of the better UK cities, having been to Florence it is a bit of a step up if art, history and culture are your things. Beautiful surrounding countryside as well. Did I mention the food and wine......

What is the matter with our management ,cant they make a decision ,in my opinion Bulut has done a fair job with what he had to put up with embargos and our inept management,if we lose him in my opinion it will be a greater loss than when Dave Jones left.So come on pull your bl**dy fingers out and give him a fair 2 year contract hes earned it.See you all next year and have a great summer i know i will, and keep safe.

    Bulut must resign
Actually one can argue with the numbers, yes Bulut knows how to win games but he's equally good at losing games so the problem for me is that he can't draw a game when we up are against it in the last quarter. The fact that I predominantly do 2-2 in the prediction league and that i would have been a shoe-in for promotion to the BIG league has no bearing on this statement

    An interesting point.
Are managers like players in that they remain employed until June or the start of the transfer window or whenever it is?

I’m constantly on the fence but his inability to get the players up for a game at an already relegated team and disrespecting the fans by keeping the loanees on rather then playing the youngsters on the bench has made my vote swing against him.

    In favour of who?
Are we fancying another summer of uncertainty with a last-minute appointment that will in turn mean no pre season acquisitions other than last minute panic buys again? All with every chance of someone else having to work with the same group and have to find out about his squad when the season is under way. This inevitably leading to a relegation scrap with a second new manager at Christmas.
I'm not holding my breath, but Tan needs to put some effort into learning about the game and actually supporting a manager.
Also, I firmly believe that some footballers are beyond being fired up in the circumstances like today.
Like most football fans Bluebirds want a quick fix but I'm afraid doe to our stubborn, clueless owner and his board, we're too entrenched in a negative spiral.
Time to realise that it will take time and stability and, for VT to remember the fans.
Bulut in for me with hopefully help from the owner.

Points taken Clingo but, apart from 3 or 4 games, has Bulut shown he can actually manage a Championship club? Maybe a year isn't long enough for a foreign manager but I now see few signs that he can take the club forward.

Muddled thinking and tactics. No sign of him developing any sort of football style. Little sign of him inspiring the players to achieve better things.

Surely we want more from our manager and club?
