Nope, it's just how I view life in general. What do I mean, if someone tells me they are using a food bank, but later that day tell me they've booked a cheap trip to Turkey, it may change my perspective on their level of poverty. Another example, if someone had £500 and they've got a choice to improve their diet via improving their weekly shop for a month or more or buying a new guitar, my perspective will be based on the decisions they choose to make. For me life has always been about priorities in order, food and roof being the first two. Anyone who switches items in front of those two items in my view is not poor, I'm talking UK only here. If I spend £400 of that £500 on a guitar and the rest on food, and I've saved some pennies to go to Turkey for a week, with the aid of a friend, it does not make me poor, it means I had a choice, and if I go hungry in that scenario it was my choice, no one else is to blame, other than me. Just because I don't have a holiday or can't buy that guitar I may like, does not make me poor, it just means my level of disposable income does not stretch to luxurious items. Now if someone offers to buy you those luxurious items, you still can help yourself by saying, well actually mate I'd rather improve my standard of living and say the money spent on that luxurious item, would be better spent on my well-being....now this is where your bike could quite rightly come in (exercise), BUT at £3k lol no fooking chance....oops £3.5k now. That's the best I can explain it, it's not meant to be an exact science or replication of life and the situation changes even more so if you have kids and difficult choices have to be made.
See when you're not personalising it, we can actually agree on some things I would never assume to know somebody's motive for spending money, or what that says about them or their background or ethics. Especially from what they post on here. That would just be guesswork, and kind of pointless to make those assumptions anyway. I'm just not that interested in other people's finances and you only ever get a brief snippet of people's lives on here anyway. But yeah, in general I think a lot of people are encouraged to spend money that they don't have. That's not something I tend to do. If I want something I'll save up for it, or work out how I can pay for it with what I've got. But I think the lure of buy now, pay later is deliberately designed to lure people into buying things that they can't afford. It's a big part of how financial institutions make their money anyway, through interest on debt. So there's a whole industry based on people getting into and servicing those debts. There is of course debt that can then make you money. For example people who buy properties, with a mortgage and then rent them out. If your rental income is higher than your debt, it's good debt v a bad debt. As for the bike lol. It just is what it is. I could afford to buy it without having to borrow money or get into debt as I'd saved up. As I mentioned, Saff is about to drop £3k on a Tattoo, to me that probably seems as crazy as it does to you spending £3k on a bike, but it's horses for courses. In the same way that some folk spend that sort of money on a piece of furniture or drop £30k on a new kitchen. If they can afford it, then it's up to them

Where we would split here, I’m looking at a grail, don’t do enough off-road for a specialist MTB. But want to be able to do some light trail stuff. So the best compromise for me. really good value for money with Canyon.
Lol, that Spectral was very much middle of the range too. I think the top end ones are around £5k and then the e-bikes which are a fair whack more AL6. So Alu frame, fox 36 forks, fox DPX2 rear shock As I've just found out, the hubs are cheapish and I've goosed the rear after 3 years of riding through the slop. Just put a DT Swiss 350 on the back
My point all along was you joined the race to the top, to explain how that occurred I had to state items that you had told us, to keep it factual. I stand by saying you are a hypocrite, condemning the race to the top while actually engaging in it - even if it is a better life for your family, it's still a race to the top. I'd always say if you live in London or Cornwall and own a property, it gives you a immense financial security. If you sell a property for a £million in London and buy a property South or even North of that for £350k it leaves you with a £650k surplus - so like I say, the seller (correction: owner) is never poor, because they have choices. Albeit that would have to fit into any work model, depends how astute you are when it comes to finances. Otherwise it's like me having a Jaguar and then claiming poverty because I can't afford to fill it I should add. my explanations were merely to explain my train of thought, it was never personal, it was factual, it wasn't to succumbe to your bullshite to wriggle your way out of stuff.
you need to educate yourself on maintaining the bearings. Save money and keep bits lasting longer. For a mid range bike and Alu frame is ideal, carbon would just mean cheaper components/forks. I went back to Alu for road bikes about 4 years ago and have a Ti one too. but tempted by carbon for the gravel bike for the compliance/stiffness they can lay up in certain areas.
Yeah direct from the factory in Germany, so you're not paying 3rd party sales profit etc. Although, you do pay import taxes. Is the Grail a gravel bike ? I've heard good things about the Lux and Exceed, but I think they are more XC bikes I love my Spectral, it does everything I need. I can also pack it up and use it as a bike packing rig, and it can take a hammering on all of the loose granite rocky trails and coast paths around here.

Yeah, I should have changed the bearings a long time ago in that rear hub lol. In the end it just chewed up the freehub and the cassette was literally wobbling around. The DT Swiss one has sealed bearings, so it should be pretty bombproof. But I'll keep on top of it Yeah Carbon for the gravel bike would be ideal. I got scared off of a carbon MTB just because of the sheer amount of rocks and bits of gravel etc that fly up and get caught in between the front and rear triangle. This is on a full sus of course and wouldn't be a problem on a HT Also, like you say, the lay up of the carbon is a huge factor in the strength of the frame.
