Not so sure on that one mate, specifically pure number 9s. They still exist in my opinion and can turn a good side into a elite one.

I look at sides and see how a 9 makes them ultra effective. Villa have it cracked, Kane we all know, Isaac looks a monster, Haaland is different altogether. Solanke has Bournemouth looking better. In the championship I look at Hardie at Plymouth and dream about him in our side. Then you have the likes of Sargeant, Rutter, Armstrong, Adams, Stewart, Vardy, Simms, Maja. Even the lad Gallagher at Blackburn showed us what a number 9 looks like. League has more than a few as well like Clarke-Harris, Colby Bishop, Charles, Leaburn, Collins. I watch Derby a bit and they play to a 9.

I dont think there is a lack of 9s, if you want one. Some sides though dont want to play that way. And it has become a little bit vogue to play with a false 9, like City and Arsenal have done. Liverpool to a lesser extent. In our case we just have bought poorly in the position recently. Time to go and be serious about it and if it were me I would bet everything on Hardie.

Hardie looked like Ross Stewart reborn when we played them last. Tailor-made replacement...if that wasn't an outlier of a performance... and I've personally not seen him play since.

Does any of that apply to you ...

... you seem unwilling to appreciate other opinions and always want to set people against each other.

This isn't the first time you've had a pop at the board and how it runs. Why not just stick to the football, although you could only manage two snide little comments on the match thread tbf.

I've no idea how the board runs. I know how you would like it to run already though. And as for snide comments, I'll take that as a complement from the apparent king. Looks like I'm learning.

I dont think it is an outlier. I have watched him closely for a couple of years. When we played them in our promotion season from league 1 he was outstanding. As close to the style of our own Stewart as I saw. I know at least one other poster agreed with me so I am not totally mad <laugh> unless my pal @clockstander is going to ignore me.

He has everything you could want in a 9 for me. He has running power, can score different types of goals, has strength to hold it up and a tremendous touch. He presses with massive intelligence and he is ultra hungry. I am not saying he is Haaland and will of course have limitations, but put him in between Clarke and Roberts and he is getting 15 goals and 10 assists in my opinion. I should probably stop dreaming as I suspect he may not be on our radar, but if I were a championship manager he would be top of my list, after that lad Rutter at Leeds anyway. He is a tremendous footballer.

Give it a rest man, it's obvious you've been on here before.

You keep trying to set people against each other because you're more interested in that than the football.

You managed two sarcastic little comments on the entire match thread yesterday.

Carry on though, other people have already called you out.

Why would I try to set people against each other? There's no vacancy there by the looks of it. It's very well filled by you.

Last bit of dopamine you get from me. Enjoy your evening.

This is the third or fourth time you've come on complaining about the board and how it runs.

It's obvious you want to set people against each other and engineer disputes.

People, on here, may argue and fall out but that's rare and doesn't usually last too long ...

... it's certainly not the RTG you keep suggesting it is.

At least people argue about the football, something you seem to have very little interest in.

Maybe Heckinbottom is more what we need, knows the league, knows how to get promotion out of it, might not be a "big" name, but if the average tenure of a coach is around 18 months, then if he does his job, gets us up then we move on is that a bad thing?
Im really not keen on Heckingbottom, seems a nice bloke but i just dont rate him as a manager

I know he got sheff utd promoted but their squad/team was by far the strongest in the league last season imo

His football was poor and i know a couple of sheff utd season ticket holders n they said his tactics were so poor. They said he just relied on having better players than the opponents

He would have my full backing if it is him but my gut tells me hes not the right man for the job

See I disagree, even with the examples you have used very few are pure number 9s.

Watkins at Brentford/Exeter was used across the front line, Kane plays very deep, Isak played wide for Sociedad, Haaland yep but look at how much he costs, Solanke yes but it's taken him a while to get to this level, Hardie got bullied on friday he was so poor against Rotherham, Sargent was playing wide a lot until last season, Rutter is a hybrid forward, Armstrong has played all over the field including in CM this season, Adams yes, Stewart effectively a wide player before he was here, Vardy is on 130k a week in the championship, Simms yes, Maja yes, Gallagher has played more wide than striker in his career, including plenty under Mowbray.

25 players have scored 10+ in the championship this season, I think 9 are pure 9s.
Maybe we see 9s differently. No disrespect mate but if you are suggesting Stewart isnt a 9, because he played wide 4 years ago then I may never sway you. Phillips was a full back...

Ollie Watkins is an out and out 9 for me. Absolute elite level. As is Kane. They are real throw back 9s. I go back to 9s like Hately, as an example of what folk often refer to. He was not restricted to the box. He would come in to receive and set up play. Even Lineker did it, and at Barca was renowned for his little give and go in deep. 9s arent lads who just play in the box, never have been. If we are saying Kane isnt a 9 I am probably in the wrong game.

My definition of a 9 is somebody who is the highest point on the pitch in transition. Somebody who is the outball into a channel or a wall pass. Then they are lads who have that desire to beat their marker to the ball, whether on the deck or in the air. They need instinct to see the play developing and hit positions that wingers have to hit. Wyke was a prime example in his 30 goal season. Johnson did the oldest coaching trick in the book and had him run across his man. Once McGeady trusted that run he just hit the front post area (POMO) and the rest is history.

As an aside, the easiest position on the pitch to coach is 9, in my opinion. There is nothing complex and very few instructions. Only good coaches understand how to coach other players to work with a 9. Having wingers and midfielders move the ball quick enough and pull opposition players about is tough. Wingers tend to be hard to coach in my opinion, head down merchants and ball greedy buggers. I reckon some coaches have taken the easy route of not wanting to teach wingers how to be massively effective - path of least resistance.

Anyway, put me in charge of transfers and I will give you 2 proper 9s, no bother <cheers>

All fair points, but I am starting to think we need a been there done it coach. Still is highly rated, but the championship and English football is a different animal to France imo

You make a cracking point about the definition of a no9. Thats where i think a lot of supporters still go back to the traditional no9's of the striker being the main goal scorer. Thats where they get disappointed when strikers dont score loads of goals, stewarts record kept being brought up when we signed him, yet any time he played upfront for ross County he was a handful.

Thats why i liked gelhardt, not a goal scorer but he gave defenders a hard time, linked play well, held the ball up pretty well, drew fouls from defenders - for him to take his game to the nxt level is by running the channels better n improving his movement in the final 3rd

Strikers these days need to be judged on more than just goals
