No doubt you are one of these who declares someone who has been here for a few months is as English as the rest of us but the Queen, whose family have been here for centuries is German.

Cultures are inherently exclusionary in some form or other. Would you argue African-Americans don’t have a culture because they have become forcibly detached from their West African culture and language 400 years ago and instead have cultivated their own distinct culture? What about Jamaicans? They too have cultivated a unique culture that is distinct from cultures in West Africa.

By the way, a melting pot is not a multicultural society where several different cultures live within the same country. It’s a homogenous society in which the dominant culture assimilates or attempts to assimilate out-groups.

You need to re read my main post from yesterday
The reason I tiptoe around subjects is because they are usually too big to debate on here.
You win because you shouted loudest and threw insults so you are right of course well done ! , a top class contribution . I had a very aggressive father who was also ‘right’ as kids we felt the ‘impact’ of that . Maybe that’s why the 70’s suited me for a while .

The endless arguing on subjective matters over the past. Its just the Daily Mail comments section hitting the Guardian comments head on. No compromise, no acceptance of another opinion and no one wins, everyone loses - the authors of the posts and the readers also.

Never noticed you changing your mind and accepting other opinions over your own to be fair. Though you are one of the more even handed people on here.

I was trying to give people a chance to show that when they said English culture, they didn't mean white culture. I guess that bird has flown now. Oh and Cambridge dictionary definition of melting pot - "a place where many different people and ideas exist together, often mixing and producing something new".

As England was predominantly white, almost exclusively white, up until fairly recently, then English culture, whether including arrivals from Scandinavia and mainland Europe is predominantly white culture.

I never defined English culture in regards to race. Cultures can be exclusionary in ways other than race. Like I said, there are clear cultural distinctions between African-Americans and West Africans due to the 400 years of cultural divergence.
