So you can't define it, except by pointing out who it excludes. Another one on his tiptoes I think.Probably because you’re not as bright as you think you are. I meant exactly what I said.

England has not always been a melting pot.

Crime rates dropping? You mean less collars felt. You seem to be tiptoeing around something, why not wade in and tell us what you mean. More shops are shuttered so that means ... what? Crime rates have generally been falling in the last twenty years but there has been a blip more recently, coinciding with huge cuts in public spending and front line police. Is that the fault of people who don't fit your definition of English?

Discussing our heritage is not politics. This thread has moved away from the England kit and is starting to move into politics, if it continues we'll close it, which may be a blessing.

****ing boring

Why? Someone with a different viewpoint? I assume you were addressing your remark to others than JHE10 and OffThe Line as you don’t seem to jump in on them.
The endless arguing on subjective matters over the past. Its just the Daily Mail comments section hitting the Guardian comments head on. No compromise, no acceptance of another opinion and no one wins, everyone loses - the authors of the posts and the readers also.
I was trying to give people a chance to show that when they said English culture, they didn't mean white culture. I guess that bird has flown now. Oh and Cambridge dictionary definition of melting pot - "a place where many different people and ideas exist together, often mixing and producing something new".Cultures are inherently exclusionary in some form or other. Would you argue African-Americans don’t have a culture because they have become forcibly detached from their West African culture and language 400 years ago and instead have cultivated their own distinct culture? What about Jamaicans? They too have cultivated a unique culture that is distinct from cultures in West Africa.
By the way, a melting pot is not a multicultural society where several different cultures live within the same country. It’s a homogenous society in which the dominant culture assimilates or attempts to assimilate out-groups.

Talking about the weather is frfo a definition of being EnglishAs a smug ****er I'd just like to say, what a load of old toss. Saying England is and always has been a melting pot of different peoples and cultures is not denigrating England. Also English smug ****ers probably wouldn't be saying stuff about other nationalities and peoples, leaving it to the smug ****ers in those countries to say whatever they want. Where the smug ****erati do have a problem tends to be with people who use the idea of 'English culture' (which they generally struggle to define, falling back on 'if you don't know what it is there's no point in me explaining it') as a way of excluding those whose families have arrived more recently than theirs.
P.S. If any non-smug ****ers would like to have a go at a definition of 'English culture', have at it.
