Only Fools and Horses star Michael Jayston, who played the father of Raquel Turner in the BBC sitcom, has died aged 88 following a 'short illness'.

He appeared in the Christmas 1996 episode of the show, called 'Time On Our Hands', in which he helped Derek and Rodney Trotter finally become millionaires.

His character James Turner was an antiques expert who spotted they had a rare watch which the brothers went on to auction off for £6.2million, in what many fans see as one of the most beloved episodes.

He did some really great stuff long before Only Fools - he played opposite Sir Alec Guinness in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, a TV series called Quiller. The man with the great voice, RIP

Had forgotten about Quiller. Enjoyed it at the time. Has never been repeated or released on TV. But the episodes, unlike a lot of other, were not wiped and are on youtube. Will have to have a look again.

Once saw the writers of Dad’s Army discussing the programme.They said for some reason these things work better with a short name. In the American version the character had a long name and it did not get any laughs. Mind you reading on youtube some of them don’t get it anyway. If you don’t tell him Pike what do you tell him being one response. Amazing how a comma alters the meaning.<laugh>

He had his name on a restaurant in Orlando, it had a massive guitar outside, went in and after about 30 mins of hillbilly music I’d had enough.
