My sincere condolences for your loss. Gary was a fine man who I knew only from my support of Hull City. He was there when the club needed the fans the most through some difficult times and of course those of us who were there never forget. I've spent some wonderful times with your dad, always at football or at City fund raising nights and I considered him a friend. I last bumped into him at Man City in a bar at the ground and we embraced like long lost brothers, I think he'd flown in just for the game. You are a lucky man to have had a father like Gary Milner. God bless and UTT.
Really kind words, made me feel quite emotional that someone would feel that way. I'm flying out on Monday with Metzy who you may know, we will be sure to raise a glass to him and remember those dark but wonderful times at City.
what kind of worthless scumbag does someone have to be to do something like that? the sort that we used to say would be first up against the wall.
I remember him from school. South Holderness same school as our own Chris Chilton went too. He owned/run Birkholme Country Club we had some great nights at Birkholme. RIP fella.
Sincere condolences @Jim the Tiger to you & family. I spend a fair bit of time in Cyprus, was good to see “one of our own” doing so well, Gary was well thought of for hard work & charity work, as borne out in hundreds of condolence messages on fb. I also remember him from many moons ago, from at Birkholme Country Club with his family, a venue of its time with some top acts. Happy days. Later, at Coniston. RIP Gary
Thank you Tigress. Birkholme was a time when I was no more than 6 or 7 so don't remember a whole lot but people have told me lots over the years.
Mary Weiss, the lead singer of 1960’s pop group the Shangri-Las, has died at the age of 75, her record label said. The US girl group rose to stardom with a run of hit songs about teenage love and tragedy, including Remember (Walking In The Sand) and Leader Of The Pack – which was later inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Weiss took centre stage of the sound and look of the Shangri-Las, helping to pioneer the girl group era alongside the Ronettes.
Used to like them at the time. Looked the sort of girls parents wouldn’t approve of. She was a very grown up looking 16 ear old as well as talented.
Condolences Jim, your old fella sounds like he was a top bloke. RIP Gary, once a Tiger, always and forever a Tiger.
Sorry to hear of the passing of your dad Jim, once a Tiger always a Tiger, RIP, best wishes to you and you're family
RIP Gigi Riva, Italy and Cagliari footballing hero, dies aged 79 after heart attack Lorenzo Tondo please log in to view this image The Italian football legend Gigi Riva, renowned for his extraordinary goalscoring ability and widely considered to be one of the greatest strikers of all time, died on Monday aged 79. According to la Gazzetta dello Sport, Italy’s all-time leading goalscorer had been admitted to hospital following a heart attack on Sunday. Initially thought to be in stable condition, medical sources later revealed that his condition deteriorated and that the heart attack was more serious than anticipated. Throughout his career, Riva garnered acclaim as one of the standout players of his generation, notching an impressive scoring record for Cagliari. His physical presence and powerful shooting earned him the nickname Rombo di Tuono(thunderclap). Riva’s accomplishments extended to the international stage, where he triumphed in the 1968 European Championship and secured a runner-up spot in the 1970 World Cup, yielding only to the formidable Brazil team led by Pelé. He also represented Italy in the 1974 World Cup. With 35 goals in 42 official appearances between 1965 and 1974, Riva still tops the list of Italy’s all-time leading goalscorers. Photograph: Alessandro Sabattini/Getty Images Riva played almost his entire club career with Cagliari and was Serie A top scorer when the Sardinian team won the Italian league title for the only time in their history in 1970. He was honorary president of the club at the time of his death. In his last interview, Riva told Corriere della Sera last June: “My biggest regret? My parents who didn’t see me become famous. “When playing for Cagliari, beating Juve, AC Milan and Inter Milan was always a great satisfaction.” Injuries marred the latter part of his playing career and forced him to retire in 1976, having scored 164 league goals for Cagliari in 315 matches. After his playing days, Riva assumed various roles within the football community. He worked as a senior managing official, player adviser, and consultant for the national team until 2013. “It’s a really sad day – today we lose one of the symbols of Italian football, a fantastic player and above all a real man,” the former England head coach Fabio Capello said.
Great player. RIP. True story... A mate and I were being interviewed by a Yorkshire post journo in a pub in Leeds one lunchtime in '70 or '71. My mate had been an England Schoolboy international rugby union player in the past, hence the interview ( His club at the time was Morley RFC). In response to something I said to the journo, my mate said to him, "Don't mind Luigi, he's always taking the mickey out of me playing rugby instead of playing football - you've just gotta pretend your laughing at his daft jokes !". The journo took a photo of the two of us, beers in hand, and said the photo would likely be included in that evening's Post in a brief article. So it was, including the bit about me being called Luigi. It was my mates nickname for me because I had told him many a time that Luigi Riva was a brilliant player, and a few months earlier both L.R. and myself were wearing casts on our left ankles after suffering similar football related injuries. Still got the article & photo cutting somewhere - my mate certainly got me back big time for my piss-taking !
