He’s definitely hands on like. I can’t remember Mowbray in any of the training videos ever in and around the players like Beale is in these videos. It was always Dodds with the players and Mowbray watching from the side. Clearly a different style of coaching.

I believe ships were fitted out in Sunderland. That's what my Granda did in the shipyards. For example, Manor Quay was a fitting out quay and I think Short's became a fitting out yard when it was taken over by Bartram's.

I lived up in the hills in Stanley so there were no ships up there, thankfully, so urban myth was rife.

Taking the comments on here into consideration, I would guess that @Smug in Boots is probably correct and it's a relatively recent piss take on the Sunderland accent, which I love by the way.

and seafarers is what I understand it to
Out of curiosity, do you mean the term Mackem, or Mackem and tackem?

given the shipyards closed late 80s after a 10 year demise, and you’d never heard of it for your first 50 years ( I presume you’re not 85), who coined the term? A local historic reference to better, prouder days.. or not?

I never heard of the phrase until the nineties, and had always been told it was coined to be derogatory by insecure, imbecilic mags… even though their attempt to be derogatory made no sense… as is often the case.

It then became a badge of honour, and I’ve been told by this Sunderland lads that I know, born and bred.

I’m not. I was born/grew up in County Durham, with my Safc roots via my mother’s family who were a coal mining family from Jarrow - fanatical Sunderland Geordies.

Well, after all the hoo-ha over the appointment I'm very much looking forward to Saturday and the matchday thread.

His statement on appointment was good, as was the presser and that training video also looks excellent imo.

I liked uncle Tony very much and thought we pulled the trigger a bit early but the club have made a decision and I'll back Beale until the wheels come off (as they do for all gaffers at some point). HTL

It’s just insane to me. We have a sporting director who’s almost exclusively provided nothing but good progress for the entirety of his time here and yet we have a sizeable proportion of our fanbase, led by WMS and the like, who absolutely despise him.

I think the White House might have more than a handful of local reporters though.

I have to fight against my prejudices because although he has done good things, I still find him smarmy.

Don’t think he’s smarmy just think he is awkward communicating in formal situations You could see the difference in the training sessions much more at home and to be honest that’s all that matters. Worked with loads of gob ****e managers who could talk but couldn’t do the job

I grew up in Hetton and when I went to uni in the 80s I'd never heard the term Mackem either. In the Fullwell the fans sang the Sunderland version of the Blaydon races, Geordies here geordies there etc etc. Everyone I met down South would say I had a geordie accent. I agree the term Mackem wasn't commonly used until the 90's.

Anyway the match day thread is Up - Enjoy <cheers>

Speakmans alright. I can understand how the way he comes across turns a few off but in my opinion he’s done a good job. From where the club were when SD left to where we are now is an unbelievable turn around some people will never be happy that’s just football but the club is in a bloody good place at the minute

Beale spoke well and batted off questions about the pressure of succeeding Uncle Tony.

One thing he touched on (and I suspect has been an issue within the club for a while) is to improve in both boxes. It's good he brought this up, given we have not been clinical enough scoring goals and have had issues defending set pieces/balls into the box by some of the more physical teams in the league. If we can take the good football already being played and be more effective with it then we will give anybody a game in that league.

Time will tell on whether we will progress under him - but there is nothing in there to suggest we won't.
