BBC say the 9M will help towards his continuing rehab & return to work?
Pretty sure most people with 9M (on top of his fortune) wouldn’t be thinking about work!!
Who’d have thought that driving round like an idiot could potentially result in an accident occurring?!?

The whole premise of Top Gear is that these people are doing things the rest of us would be too scared to do ...

... the fact they're insisting nothing can ever go wrong contradicts that and renders their position ridiculous.

Myself, and many other people, have done more dangerous things just for the crack ...

... like the Sunderland lad at Wimbledon who jumped on a police motorbike, wheelied it down the street and vanished <laugh>

Not sure about the ins and out Smug, but I'm sure I read somewhere that he waited best part of an hour with half of his face ripped off for medical attention. Top Gear have pushed the boundaries for years, not so much when CMH were on the show, but they had the new presenters doing some stupid ****, ie Wall of death. But I agree, get into a car with a rocket attached to it and one day, someone will be hurt or worse. But, no-one forces these people to do these things.

Did Richard Hammond get a massive payout for his crash?

Is this the reason why he could have sued them, cause otherwise surely it was all what he agreed to do?

He was in charge of his own safety, did he not think he should have at least worn a crash helmet or did they forget to bring it along with the ambulance

Isn't that like saying Brandon Lee was at fault for not bringing a bullet proof vest to work?

Pretty sure there are people paid to look after safety. Well paid people.

These clowns are praised and admired for their idiotic antics ...

... I'd bet their fans are quick to condemn teenage joyriders.

And surely it's only the element of danger that attracts viewers, otherwise it's just middle aged men driving around.

Nobody's twisting these guys arms to drive like lunatics.
Don't think a payout on this scale is appropriate.

Employed to do a job with elements of danger. Life altering injuries as a result of employer negligence. Dunno how you turn this into a snowflaky incident.
Pay out is linked to loss of earnings over last 2 years - it's not punitive in this country

You are in charge of your own safety, I wouldn’t let anyone tell me it’s safe to do something when I know it’s not. If he cannot see how dangerous it is to drive an open top 3 wheeler without a helmet then it’s his own fault. Would he ride a motorcycle without one. No

I suppose its lack of helme, the line about he didn't need one from the car manafacture i think it is saying he didn't need helmet as the car was road legal without a helmet and had halo bars is nonsense.

Legal driving on a road and a track is different, you aren't legally allowed to drive that car above 70 on any road! Or try to take corners at high speed!

I never watched top gear for years even back to Clarkson years, but as far as I remember the star in the reasonably priced car gesture they wore racing helmet, neck brace etc. Despite being in a car with full roof and safety features, also unlikely to reach the speed of this car he was in?

Hadn't thought about this was initially agreeing yeah got injured driving a car fast as part of his job, agreed to the money to do it etc.. then I read and thought about the no helmet while driving a car (a ****ing go kart really) with no roof at speeds of up to 130 mph. Should have been told.to wear a helmet!

Agree with everything you say mate a very good post, he should’ve know for himself he needed a helmet though without being told to do. We are all responsible for our own safety in every job that we do. I also don’t know how a person who has trained all his life as a cricketer would think he’s a professional racing driver to do the speeds and stunts he’s asked to do.

Doubt that's how it works legally in the position he was in. Employee being asked to drive that car by his employer, they should have done a risk assessment and told him to wear the appropriate safety gear.

The article makes it sound like Flintoff has been very reasonable if anything. So fair enough the lad lost 9 million in earnings in two year (not sure that isn't exaggerated of what his real earnings would have been but not for me to decide, I'm not getting into licence fees <laugh>) they agreed to pay him that.

So employers have no responsibility to look after their employees at all? It's all just on the individual?
