At least it would be consistent. VAR only comes into effect if it's an automated process or a captains appeal. Other than that refs decision on the field stands.

Either that or rig the GPS up to an electric shock device and if the player is offside when the ball is played he cops a whack. Guarantee players would stay onside if that was implemented.

I also think that they should get rid of pads in cricket and do away with LBW. If the batsman is happy to cop a 95mph ball to the shins then he deserves to stay in

All the players wear GPS trackers nowadays so that could be tapped into. If they're gonna do it then do it properly.

Agree with what was posted earlier. If it's not automated and the ref misses it then it's up to the captain to challenge. Each side has 1 per half, if successful they retain their challenge. If not they lose it

They would need GPS trackers all over their body to automate offsides based on the current ridiculous margins. If it was a central location, say a tracker on the chest, some clubs would complain certain physical types would have an advantage. It's another minefield.

I'd either scrap VAR completely or go with 1 or 2 calls allowed per team per game. All calls should then be referred the referee who reviews the footage on the pitch-side monitor and his decision is final.

Automate offside decisions completely. No human input - that's where the problem always lies.

i seem to remember (many years ago mind) some television channel arranged a game with 'new technology', pretty sure there were sensors within the ball and the players had sensors inside their socks, obviously there were sensors along pitch side to detect offsides...i think it turned into a pretty much failed experiment having got some decisions wrong, technology has, of course, advanced since then so something similar could possibly work.

personally, i am one that likes to see the officials doing the jobs they are there for and grew up accepting that they are only human and mistakes will happen, yet for all those years i cannot remember a single official being 'hounded' for a mistake, that only really came into being when the premier league wa sformed and the multi angle cameras were brought in...current use of the technology has only shown that certain teams get favoured and human error is still there.

Linesmen (or whatever they are called now) might as well not be there, even without VAR. They just wait until the ref has made a decision then agree with whatever that decision is.

True. The technology should mainly be there as a help to the referee. There's no reason why we can't make offside completely automated these days though. It's not something that requires interpretation. The technology is mature now.

Why every VAR decision requires the ref to leave the pitch to look at it is beyond me.

exactly, which is why i want them back to doing their jobs...i hate this new 'don't flag for offside and let VAR decide' because i feel allowing play to continue will result in fouls as defenders race back, i am also sick to death of watching the linesman put his flag in one hand, look to the ref then change hands, they are there to officiate the game so why stop them.

plenty mention other sports have made technology work but that is because they do not (yet) have certain teams/groups that must do well to maintain the world-wide audience.

For me the trouble is not VAR but the people who are making it almost impossible to implement it with crazy rule changes and measuring 1mm off sides. The premise was for clear and obvious errors to be put right which I am all for but the problem you have and have always had is that referees are seen as being beyond reproach which leads to them feeling untouchable.
This is not a new thing it has been going on for years, Mike up the referees so we can hear the adjudications what is there to hide. if the ref wants a private word with a plyer he just does not switch on the mike (works well in Rugby) the problem with Liverpool would not have happened as communication would have to be clear and concise not just a couple of mates ballsing it up.
I for one think the tech is good but the PGMOL need to look at how it is used and implement it better with a more professional attitude and a strict process of decision making and communication between all parties. Aligned with that UEFA/FIFA need to look at the laws of the game and ensure that these are able to be interpreted clearly and work with the tech.
There will always be some things open to a bit of interpretation but to cock up like they the other day and not even know what they were checking and then give a decision wrong should never happen and that is simply because the communication between to two parties involved was not standardized and robust enough to ensure that there is no chance of miscommunication.

The last bit here is just to pretend the ref is reffing the game, when in these instances, he clearly isn't.

I dont go to Sunderland games. But if I did I would certainly contemplate not going if we get promoted back to the Prem. I can imagine VAR being a proper buzz kill. Football was created to entertain. The folk who deserve to get entertained the most are those who go as spectators, who go to home games or those who spend a fortune travelling around the country at away games. I feel those who suffer most from VAR are not the clubs or their trophy cabinets or their finances, not those watching from the comfort of their armchairs or at the pub, its the fans at the matches. Even when VAR is used correctly, it will always be **** for those fans at the grounds.

Its because they have not set the correct protocols in place, we expect them to be professional but in reality they are acting like kids with a new toy. Why have they not employed experts from other sports who have developed the use of these systems to advise them instead of throwing money at referees who have never used these systems. Kids with a new toy and an I know best attitude.
Some bloke comes in from the company that developed the tech and shows them which buttons to press and which knobs to turn and we stick a guy with 15 years experience of refereeing in a seat next to his mate give him a cup of tea and a packet of Hob Nobs and say there you go lads sort out football. Refereeing is meant to be professional and VAR should be the same. The tech is not wrong but the people in charge of it and the people operating it are not experienced enough to do the job required and this situation proves that.
Get the people in that can help to make it work instead of giving the jobs to your mates so they can earn more money

It does make me wonder Roochie, but l am quite cyincal. There is a saying
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it. VAR really hasn't worked from day one, but there doesn't seem to be a will to fix it.

Years ago when you were offside when you received the ball, was easy. The change was then made too the present, when the ball is kicked.
Better for the attacking team, but difficult for the officials.
VAR, should make that easier, but still shrouded in mystery.

My cynical side is saying, when is the betting scam breaking news coming.

I have very little interest in the Premier league so other than seeing when it is called into question I don't know too much about how they operate VAR. One thing I have always assumed is it is run exactly like you have said, an operator of the system who can jump to certain events on the pitch provide lines or whatever else.is needed then turns to a trained ref and goes "this is it have a look" basically. Surely it's not all refs controlling it in that room?

I an not sure of which technology they use when determining when a ball has crossed the goal line.

Anyone who listens to the Audio cannot be surprised just how incompetent and Chaotic the whole of VAR is... Far too many people are involved in the decision making, no communication between the officials, competency of said officials and certainly knowing the laws of the game .whilst bearing in mind the one thing that Webb mentioned at the beginning of the season, addressing how much time it took to reach a VAR decision and that he would initiate protocols to try and speed up the decision making. That backfired spectacularly last weekend..
