Nigel Pearson left 'disappointed' as Bristol City accept bid from Bournemouth for Alex Scott Bristol City midfielder Alex Scott is poised to leave Ashton Gate following the Cherries long pursuit of the England Under-20 international Nigel Pearson is still to find out whether any funds will be made available to further strengthen his squad after the Bristol City manager confirmed that Alex Scott has been given permission to speak to Bournemouth after the Robins accepted a bid from the Premier League club. News broke shortly before kick-off of City’s Carabao Cup tie against Oxford United that Scott was undergoing a medical at Vitality Stadium having not played for the Robins so far this season due to a swollen knee. Bournemouth failed with a £15million bid earlier in the summer but have been the most consistent of Scott’s suitors and returned with an improved offer this week which is closer to City’s £25m valuation, although Pearson claimed he’s yet to discover the full breakdown of the figure. “I’ve got nothing to say, really, apart from that the club has given him permission,” Pearson said. “Outside of that I’ve got no comment. I couldn’t give you the details… I knew (about the bid) today. And that’s it, I’m not saying anymore.” When pushed further, he added: “I’d been planning to keep him. It’s nothing to do with me. It’s a club decision. I’m disappointed because we’ve got a better chance of being successful if we keep our best players so that’s where I sit on it.” With striker Tommy Conway out for up to three months with a hamstring injury, and City looking light in central defence and at goalkeeper, where Max O’Leary is the only senior option in the position, Pearson would undoubtedly like to strengthen his squad before the transfer window closes on September 1. Not to mention finding a replacement for Scott. Jason Knight served notice of his goalscoring potential from midfield with a brace as the Robins beat Oxford 5-1 to reach the second round of the Carabao Cup, with Nahki Wells and Harry Cornick also getting on the scoresheet with important contributions in light on Conway’s injury. Pearson, though, indicated he will have to wait and see whether any of the Scott fee can be reinvested back into his squad. He has previously indicated that City are limited in their ability to spend significantly in the market having nearly reached their upper limit in terms of wage expenditure and budget. “It depends whether the club makes any funds available,” Pearson added, when asked if Scott’s sale and Conway’s injury has altered his transfer focus over the next two and a half weeks. Before delivering a firm “no” whether that had been indicated to him in any way by the club hierarchy. “They’ll either tell me whether there is, or there isn’t,” he said. “I don’t need a meeting with people.” https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/bristol-city-alex-scott-bournemouth-8666811
I think this shows what most of us always knew, our manager(s) have no real say in the transfer policy, it's dictated to them from above, and they just have to live by it, or leave if they feel compromised by it. Let's see which camp NP lands in.
I hope we haven't accepted a cut price bid for Scott. You'd also have thought that Nige would have been advised whether there would be funds made available from any sale. and would have been invited to sit down and discuss what the options are, any possible targets etc ?
I can see NP leaving, or at the very least not staying beyond his present deal if he doesn’t get funding for more players. If they (the club) want us to progress, we must hang on to our best players where we can. If not then at least be honest with us, because NP will be. I’m sure NP’s attitude will be if you want success you must let me develop and keep our players. Let’s be honest if we fail to finish top 10 now, his answer will be if you sale my best players what do you expect.
We've seen this before. It's not new at our club. It seems to be the way Steve L has organised the board. It's not the fact we were thinking of selling Scott - that was well known, but if it's been done without Nige being involved then that's not good at all. I really hope this doesn't happen but I fear you are right Ashton. Whereas Lee Johnson was new to Championship level management (and management in general), Nige is not. LJ would have had to put up with this behaviour because he hadn't established his reputation enough to confidently walk away and land another role, so he rolled over for Ashton and the board. Nige on the other hand doesn't have to put up with that kind of **** and would easily walk into another job at this level. He has nothing to lose by walking away. Like I said; I hope this doesn't happen but I wouldn't blame him if he walked.
‘Disappointed’ - Bristol City boss makes feelings clear as Alex Scott nears Bournemouth transfer Alex Scott has been linked with a move to the topflight for months, and he may soon be a Bournemouth player https://www.bristolworld.com/sport/...s-alex-scott-set-for-bournemouth-move-4249914 * Pearson spoke for the first time since the new development and couldn’t hide the frustration of likely losing his star man. “I’ve been planning to keep him,” he said. “It’s nothing to do with me, it’s a club decision. I’m disappointed because we’ve got a better chance of being successful if we keep our best players.” * Pearson continued: “I’ve got nothing to say really, the club has given him permission, so that’s that. I’ve got no comment... I couldn’t give you the details, I knew today and that's it. I'm not saying anymore.” *In regard to whether City will look to bring in a striker to make up for Conway’s absence, or a midfielder to replace Scott, Pearson said: “It depends if the club make funds available. They will either tell me whether there is or there isn’t. I don’t need a meeting with people.” At the risk of repetition, 4 very important points , it seems Nige has been totally bi-passed,(A) he didn't know the developing situation,(B) the possible lower price agreement,(C) No forward planning agreed with him on finance available,(D) lack of contact between Nige, the CEO or the Lansdowns, this could lead to a serious breakdowm, right at the start of our season, they need to collectively get together, sort it out and communcate it to the fanbase.
Same in LJ days. Losing best players doesn’t help the cause if you’re looking to have a season to challenge for top spots.. I hope that isn’t an excuse that will be used if we fail!
He is right We need to invest in three players no9 big pacey/strong-midfielder-goalkeeper no if's or butts. Nige has seen Semenyo and Scott go -possibly Bell-Conway-Pring next-you can't keep selling your better assets and expect to compete. Nige has not been offered a new contract not sure if he wants a new contract may be he wants to see where the club is going. He has done exactly what the owners have asked of him reduce the wages-squad-and kept us in the championship. You cannot expect any club to move forward when you keep selling your best assets. I do wonder if he makes a decision and says i have done as much as i can with the resources you are or have given me. SL and JL are looking to sell or at very least see investment from other sources this seems for some strange reason quite. The potential for Bristol City to go forward is massive-the area and the fans are there just need to give them something to get right behind. Interesting to see what happens over the next few months-which way are the Lansdown family going to go time will tell.
I think it is deeper than that. Whilst we all have a different take on each manager [ coach set up ] we have then I would have kept the the 2 coach's basically forced to leave. HOWEVER NP has stated he had a plan to build a team of youngsters younger players ] including a lot of our own academy players, and although thought he was a 6/10 at best before this season I could see the squad becoming well balanced so instead of being "100% ! " behind the manager I was now 101% !! This is supposed to be the "last season of NP's "it will take!" and now we are doing a Brownhill and getting rid of the pin that holds the wheel in place for the future. I would be very PISSED off if I was NP ... he seems to like it down here! but reckon he could readily walk to another team ................. BCFC home to broken promises...broken plans .... broken teams ...
Now you can understand what LJ was going through.. it led us into buying inferior players just to maintain our championship status..
I think Lansdown got his fingers burnt badly with the faith, investment and ultimately failure he got with the LJ regime, followed by Covid and lockdown, he has got wounded pride and he is not going to repeat the same mistakes again, Nige is walking a tightrope, especially with Jon L in the mix.
If anything happens and Nige walks away, then it will be the usual suspects, or rather the usual poor practices by the owner/board that led to it.
I know you don't see it that way, but it wasn't LJ, as this isn't NP. It was Ashton that was the issue then.
Bob Dylan sang about this situation...... (242) Bob Dylan - Everything Is Broken (Official Audio) - YouTube
Nigel Pearson could take and be offered any job in the championship Done a incredible job and if he has been blanked reference the sale of Scott he has every right to say bye bye. Then we go back to the drawing board and we all wonder why Bristol City are where they are.
But he is doing exactly that Wiz. The Board's interference, arguably sunk Cott's attempted player deals, leading to his downfall (although I think Cotts didn't help himself in the end with poor tactics and decisions) His Chief Operating Officer sold Flint, Pack, Reid, Webster, Magnusson, Bryan and Brownhill from under LJ, leaving him with a weakened squad but with the same target goal. Arguably some of those higher-value sales were probably planned with the full knowledge of LJ, but I doubt if the Pack and Brownhill sales in particular were - they were his team captains at the time they were sold. Today we have Semenyo and now Scott going. Again, we all (Nige included) knew there was a possibility that Scott would go, but to suddenly sell without the knowledge of the team manager is VERY bad management. Nige should have been consulted - or at very least kept fully informed. Of course we are ASSUMING by the wording that he used in his statements that he knew nothing, but given what has happened to previous incumbents I'm tending to believe him.
I agree with you Ashton was part of the issue but LJ was part of the same issue ~ https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/who-blame-bristol-citys-form-3715239 While the head coach must agree on every player coming in, Ashton runs the recruitment team and has a large say on players brought in. I'm past LJ, he has long gone and I have enjoyed our little bit of sparring but he is not my concern, I have just highlighted my concerns from a fans aspect of our latest scenario, history and personal finance are SL guiding star at the moment, if there is no money then tell Nige, if there is some spare cash tell Nige, all this cat and mouse is crap, just communicate with each other and have a clear view of how to proceed..
He will have his own ideas, I’m not sure he agrees with your assessment, if he feels he’s on a hiding to nothing he’ll go imo
