No because you guessing we don't have anyone perhaps Rosenior actually believes he has the right man for the job and the player has developed a bit more now ready to assume the task in hand. By the way do you think Rosenior could have won trophies with the Clubs Guardiola has managed and the Money he has had at these Clubs along with the players he took over. Could Guardiola win L1 or L2 with the money and players these clubs have just because he might be a great manager with big Clubs.
Everyone says scoring goals is our issue not conceding less, but don't they consider that in order to be able to be more attacking and score more goals we need to have less midfielders focussed on defending by instead having a specialist defensive mid?
Who is the defensive midfielder, the Ash type we want ? Im starting to think they are a distinct breed
That would be true if the reason for our attacking issues was players staying back. Its not though, even Greaves bombs forward when he's at CB.
Fair enough, was just trying to posit a thought that showed both parties (PLT and Kalman) aren't entirely wrong or entirely right. Clearly the current squad has the ability to score and not concede an alarming number of goals, but bringing in a defensive midfielder who can take some of the load and allow Christie and Vinagre to bomb on with more confidence might allow us to be more prolific than we were.
People seem to have us pegged as some defensive unit. When in reality, take a look at the voted MOTM in the run in for the season. Darlow is there an awful lot. Yes it’s the keepers job to save shots, but if we were such a defensive unit, we’d not concede anywhere near the number of good chances we do. Top class goalkeeping ≠ A good team defensive performance
The main job of a defensive midfielder is to protect the back 4 or back 3 by making tackles, interceptions, winning loose balls and basically recycling the ball to his teammates. In recent years, they’ve become much better on the ball as well and can make clever passes to more attacking midfielders. The issue with Seri and Slater or Seri and Woods as two holding midfielders is that they don’t possess the natural strength to win the ball back in the middle of the pitch nor are they particularly gifted at tackling or winning aerial duels. The stats show it but watching games with your own eyes show it as well. PLT thinks I’m nit-picking by using Boro and Sunderland away but it’s important because we won’t be a successful team if we can’t successfully defend against these teams. Against Norwich, Burnley, Boro and Sunderland under Rosenior we conceded three goals or more in each game. So whilst we look defensively better against the likes of Cardiff, Rotherham, Blackpool and Huddersfield who sit deep and let us have more of the ball anyway, we still concede a lot of chances and quite a few goals against better teams; specifically, better possession-based teams. Just because Rosenior wants us to be a possession-based team doesn’t mean we will have 60% possession against every other team. There will be games this season, just like last season under Rosenior, when the other team has more of the ball than us and we need a midfield capable of dealing with that and working hard out-of-possession to win the ball back in the middle of the pitch. I fully expect Seri and Slater to start on Saturday so it will be interesting to see how they cope against Norwich, who absolutely dominated us in midfield and had more than 20 shots at Carrow Road last season.
I am pretty confident Simons will be given the opportunity to fill that position and once he does this season i am sure he will keep the shirt.
Here’s hoping. I think he looked very sharp and comfortable on the ball in pre-season and exactly what we’re missing in midfield.
Then what you are looking for is already at the Club and waiting for Rosenior to let him have a go as in pre-season.
As in, the one who has been making sporadic appearances in Australia for the last three years and has never played more than 30 league games in a single season of his career? More injures than Unlucky Alf that lad. And that dive against us all those years ago still stands out as one of the worst I’ve seen against us.
Amin seems to have perfectly balanced his WUM posts with sensible posts to the point people can't tell the difference these days! Didn't he also score a goal against us that came off his hand? Was one of those goals that they ended up changing the law to stop.
i think the inverse is true, because we don’t have a structured defensive midfielder and in general are quite lightweight we make up for it with very conservative boring football. A solid dm allows more freedom to the other midfielders, I actually think Bird is perfect for this role though whilst some others don’t. Game of opinions etc.
