There is an argument that Carey had spotted Bairstow leaving his crease early a few times already.
Hence he tried his luck here in case he went early again (if you watch it again he releases throw before JB starts walking)

If true, you can understand why Australia feel justified in their plan having worked

TBH the last thing the Aussies would have wanted was to turn Lords into a southern Headingley and that's exactly what they've done. If they don't get Stokes early on after lunch they could be in real trouble.

But as with a mankad, I do think they should have told Bairstow that they were going to do that (even more so here, because Bairstow wasn't looking to gain any sort of advantage, unlike with a non-striker and a mankad).

Once they have told Bairstow that they are prepared to do that to him, then it becomes fair game.

Stuart Broad is the perfect double act for this situation!
Spends almost his entire time at the non-strikers end having a go at someone in the field, then whacks the ball for 4 on one of his few turns on strike!

100 partnership!

Currently trying to juggle four different matches. But, naturally, with the test leading the way. Good stuff from Turner again.
