If you put Romero next to a Ledders-like CB, basically somebody who can read the game so doesn't need to commit, they would compliment each other perfectly

The issue is that, by playing as the RCB in Conte's system, that was placing him in situations where he would need to commit by design - and that happened more and more when our midfield lost control of games once Bentancur went down with injury and was exacerbated by Porro routinely being miles up the pitch (which does beg the question why Conte never seemed to consider Romero as a libero CCB and Dier in the Skriniar/Cahill role of his system, as on paper that always seemed like such a no-brainer)

This is also why I am hoping the links with Roger Ibanez are based more on speculation than anything else, as Ibanez is both a walking yellow card and also plays pretty much as Romero does but at LCB

My next madcap idea is sign both the Bundesliga boys and play Romero as an inverted RB. It just makes sense.

More broadly I do think the general willingness of Conte to forego any attempt to dominate possession, and the lack of depth in our midfield at the start of this year because of injuries, definitely exposed the CB unit to more than we’d have wanted. If we can get playing on the front foot then everyone, yes, even Eric Dier, will look better, though there’s still a chance he’ll be exposed by a high line.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we kept Dier though, he’s probably the one who we’d have the least interest in. I suspect Sanchez and Tanganga will have more potential buyers. And if we get Tapsoba and another LCB (VdV or Lenglet) then Dier is effectively 3rd choice RCB. So I’m not that fussed.

Weirdly, the other day I saw someone on Twitter suggest a back four with van de Ven as an inverted LB

It does have to be said that he has played LB on occasion in the past couple of seasons, albeit on a handful of occasions and not naturally playing either position in the way that Ben Davies or Piero Hincapie has done, so it isn't completely outside the realm of logic - which also has the knock-on effect of making Lenglet make sense, as having him on the bench as cover for Tapsoba* while The Other VDV plays LB means we can afford to jettison Sanchez

Now that signing is complete, how far below Kane will he be in the free-kick takers pecking order?

I wonder what number he'll take?
He's been 10 for Leicester and was previously 23. Both are taken.
He was 28 at Norwich and 8 is available, assuming Winks goes the other way.

You lot must be feeling quite confident about the way the transfer window is going - unlike some of us who are watching a disaster happen in slow motion.
Maddison is a great signing - exactly the type of player missing last season, even when you were playing well.
I think Kane will stay because he won’t go to Bayern and Levy won’t sell to another English club. The only benefit to him moving to Utd would be an increase in his wages - and I don’t think that would sway him.
There will be more comings and goings but the first moves in the market, at an early stage, bode well for you.

I thought 8 as Winks is off but really it makes more sense for Bissouma to have that. He often wears 11 for England but that probably depends on Gil? My money would be on Porro taking 2 and Maddison getting 23.

I always wonder how much players care about this sort of thing. Probably a lot more than we think because they’re often a superstitious lot and obviously it’s an ego thing.

There's definitely an ego part to it, for example Rapenaldo insists he is the No7 and everybody else better be okay with it

On the other hand there's also a seniority thing, for example David Beckham was flat told that Raul was Los Ladrones' No7 no matter how much be had invested in the DB7 branding at the time

On the other hand there is weight with some numbers, be it the Man Utd No7 or the Liverpool No9 - and most famously of all, Argentina tried to retire the number 10 jersey as the likes of Ariel Ortega or Juan Roman Riquelme were unable to deal with the pressure of wearing El Dies, and it wasn;t until Messi broke through that Argentine fans recognised somebody else wearing the jersey

But Maddison could create his own legacy with the 180 shirt - of failing that 50,40,32?
