I voted leave from a purely ideological viewpoint. Never worried a second about immigration and never believed any of the rhetoric from the pro leave camp. The reason was because I thought, still think, we're descended from small tribes that largely managed to self govern and the more we've centralized power over the years the less freedom we have. I've given up on ideology now, post covid doubt ill ever be voting on anything again. System is beyond saving. As a parent of a one and four year old, I genuinely hope I'm wrong.
Simple logic for me was how in the hell could we leave one of the biggest trading blocs in the world and expect to renegotiate better deals as a much smaller, weaker entity?
We almost broke the NI agreement, car industry is in tatters, the fishing quotas we got control of are next to useless due to rules on importing into biggest customer the EU. And don’t even get me started on the getting control of our borders… how’s that worked out so far? The EU nationals we needed for the economy are gone and everyone’s complaining about illegals and asylum seekers which were never going to be impacted anyway.
Leave is the biggest con job pulled on the British public bar none. I’m up in Scotland and the only thing that would get me to vote for independence is the chance to rejoin the EU. Fortunately looks like the SNP have imploded.

There is /was absolutely no benefit to "Brexit", the evidence is there for anyone to see plain as day. As the last poster said it was the biggest confidence trick in history. No matter what parameters you use we are worse off for leaving the EU. It was crass stupidity of the highest order to do so. The day will come when we go back cap in hand and beg to rejoin.
the problem is that now we have people who proudly sit there telling us all that those who voted leave did not read any further than facebook posts or/and were racist.
that kind of stops any kind of sensible discussion.
properly planned with a definite route to agreeable solutions rather than these 'last minute-cap in hand' begging crawls and it could have worked well for everyone.

tories did not want to leave but were pretty sure the vote would be to stay, which shows why there was no great plan, boris jumped (or was given a shove) to show that they were committed to the vote and to show that they followed the democratic vote, it is no wonder the french will not help, the only outcome in reality is that we join again..EU did not want us to leave, tories did not want us to leave and no plans were in place to handle a leave vote.

I know what you're saying mate but, let's be honest, a lot of the Leave voters cited 'controlling our borders' as the main reason. That's not racist but it's something I can't find the word for. Some people seem reluctant to say what it was they voted for. The usual answer is that, whatever it was, hasn't been carried out by civil servants or whatever

And I wouldn't watch Jeremy Clarkson if he was telling people where their nearest nuclear bomb shelter was
A poor rebuttal. It’s a thread on politics and opinions. You’re entitled to an opinion but the game here is to justify it. Name calling is stooping to levels of Nigel Farage or The Sun.
Parents of both me and the Mrs voted leave I’m pretty sure. One of the arguments is they voted to join common market as a trading block and ended up with the full European Union. I get the point that what they ended up with isn’t what they thought they’d voted for. They remember things being quite good back then but I really do sense a lot of those rose coloured glasses. However, I suspect there are quite a few out there who feel the same over the leave vote.

To leave the biggest trading bloc in the world and loose all the benefits such as freedom of movement was beyond belief IMO. We are so much weaker now then we were before..not sure how the future will pan out, but as it stands right now, there is zero benefit to leave the EU
Pro’s and Cons to the theory of brexit, but it has been used as a tool to get votes by the tories with no thought or effort gone into how it’s implemented.
The trade deals with the world including Europe should have been in place ready for day one. Our migration policies should’ve been in place from day one. I’m not against a system of immigration like Australia for example where the country decides what professions they will take as it will benefit them directly. Problem is, nothing was in place and we’ve been left in a mess because the government failed to have a thought out strategy.

A bit like Ellis Short's policy of selling our best players and replacing them with far worse ones when we got relegated from the Prem. Doomed from day one.
I’m not suggesting for a second that all of the leavers voted so because of immigration.
It’s actually fact that this element were a big influence in it being such a massive voting turnout.
I absolutely respect the right to vote, and people who did so on their own genuinely formed and considered opinions.
What is beyond question is that it has, and will continue, to be a disaster and had damaged further a country that was already in a mess.

Perhaps it'll all turn out to be as good as it was portrayed with all those saved millions pumped into a top class NHS, excellent trade deals around the world and thousands of highly skilled jobs. If that ever happens, in my lifetime, I'll be delighted.
I don't think many people would claim it's been a great success so far but we're being told it's just a matter of time. I wonder how long it will take, or how bad things will get, before people say it's failed ...
... or will they never say that and continue to blame mysterious forces for blocking all these wonderful benefits.
One thing this government is "world beating" in is making excuses. It is anyone and everyone's fault but their own. Truss even invented a fictitious group called "the anti growth alliance" as she deliberately crashed the conomy with her pal Kwasi
I have stated this before and its impossible not to bring politics into it but we had a democratically elected government to make these decisions for us, The fact that the pig fkr bottled it says a lot.

Plus why do/did we need an unelected quango of hundreds to do what was already happening when Heath took us into Europe in the early 70s.
Now I openly admit I am not the brightest in the bunch when it comes to finance, politics etc and there will be people put me right but as far as I am concerned there were much better deals, Brexit wise, to be done with the world. Switzerland and a few other countries have proven that.

1, I didn't really understand what affects the outcome would really be , so I watched a lot of what the experts and politicians said which only confused me more.
2, I believed we would have all this money that we were apparently paying into the EU to help fund a better NHS
3, I believed we would be able to form better trade deals for buy and selling outside the EU
4, I believed we would control our borders allowing professional people to come and work here and stop the influx of people that just wanted a free ride.
After watching as many programmes about it as I could before I voted I was probably more confused than when I started but thought leave was the right vote for the above reasons.
However as you can see from the reasons I voted not one has come to fruition.
I honestly believe that is why the leave vote won was because so many people didn't know exactly what they were voting for.
I work with the public everyday and the amount of times I heard comments about I'm sick of all the money we give the EU, I'm sick of all these foreigners coming in and sponging off the state, but I could guarantee 75% of these people don't even vote in a general election. Every person has the right to vote but it would be a bit better if we all knew what we were voting for
