We did ‘Animal Farm’, ‘Of Mice and Men’ and ‘Midsummer Nights Dream.

You sound like my mate in the pub

As I remember, it was a difficult read because of all the double speak, but it is good. I'd imagine the more "grown up" me would find it an easier read instead of getting it forced down my throat as a 15 year old.

The John Hurt film version is very good too

I’ve first gotta read a book I got about some blokes battle with cocaine addiction and how he stopped, then I’ll get into “1984”.
Quite liked “Homage to Catalonia”. Cemented my believe that the Left will always destroy itself with infighting

Lord of the Flies (superb), Of Mice and Men (not for me), and Romeo and Juliet (hated it) as well as 1984 - think that was because we were doing O levels that year so it was very topical

Yeah I guess it’s whatever is on the school curriculum that year that chooses what we read at school.
It’s sad that most don’t read books now
as much as we used to, due to the massive influx of entertainment out there..social media, NetFlix, Sky etc.
Maybe it’s what those in charge want…a massive ‘dumbing down’ of society

We need a revolution and a reckoning - put these ****s up against the wall, see who pisses their pants first (my money would be on un-Braverman). The country deserves better than all these ****ers can provide, too busy lining their own pockets rather than serving the people who need them most

Those in charge can't stop you reading books
They might have a preferred list but the man can't stop you
Stick it to the man and read a book

Sorry Beth I am sitting slack jawed at your first paragraph. If we, collectively, decide that we no longer want a head of state based on family they are born into and God’s permission, then the royal family would just have to go. There wouldn’t be a ‘bloody coup’ or a civil war, they would just **** off, and not a moment too soon. It’s got nothing to do with their ‘willingness’, they are in their current position because we give them permission to be there. Unless you believe that they really are there because of divine right.

As I said above, I used to be pretty apathetic about the royal family until fairly recently. Now I am firmly against. I think Liz 2 was the last acceptable face of this hideous institution, thhough the actual people (whether or not they are *****s, adulterers, attention seekers, professional victims or whatever) are irrelevant, it’s the institution which cements a cowed hierarchy, where we doff our hats to our ‘betters’ that stinks.
It’s brilliant mate. Just don’t think of it as a prediction or science fiction. It’s a description of 100% totalitarianism. The 3 main characters show three different ways to respond to knowing you are being totally oppressed. Mr Orwell wasn’t great at writing women characters or describing ‘intimate’ scenes though.

    Never endingly relevant.

I posted this quote from 1984 a little while ago....

Last night to the flicks. All war films. One very good one of a ship full of refugees being bombed somewhere in the Mediterranean. Audience much amused by shots of a great huge fat man trying to swim away with a helicopter after him, first you saw him wallowing along in the water like a porpoise, then you saw him through the helicopters gunsights, then he was full of holes and the sea round him turned pink and he sank as suddenly as though the holes had let in the water, audience shouting with laughter when he sank. then you saw a lifeboat full of children with a helicopter hovering over it. there was a middle-aged woman might have been a jewess sitting up in the bow with a little boy about three years old in her arms. little boy screaming with fright and hiding his head between her breasts as if he was trying to burrow right into her and the woman putting her arms round him and comforting him although she was blue with fright herself, all the time covering him up as much as possible as if she thought her arms could keep the bullets off him. then the helicopter planted a 20 kilo bomb in among them terrific flash and the boat went all to matchwood. then there was a wonderful shot of a child's arm going up up up right up into the air a helicopter with a camera in its nose must have followed it up and there was a lot of applause from the party seats but a woman down in the prole part of the house suddenly started kicking up a fuss and shouting they didnt oughter of showed it not in front of kids they didnt it aint right not in front of kids it aint until the police turned her turned her out i dont suppose anything happened to her nobody cares what the proles say typical prole reaction they never --

    Highly relevant.

What did you post it in relation to? *It’s really easy to brutalise people. There is no hope in the proles though, sadly.

    * must have been small boat migrants of course.

Yeah, I posted it as an extract from Suella Braverman's diary. Or maybe it was Priti Patel's... they're all the same aren't they?
