Sorry Beth I am sitting slack jawed at your first paragraph. If we, collectively, decide that we no longer want a head of state based on family they are born into and God’s permission, then the royal family would just have to go. There wouldn’t be a ‘bloody coup’ or a civil war, they would just **** off, and not a moment too soon. It’s got nothing to do with their ‘willingness’, they are in their current position because we give them permission to be there. Unless you believe that they really are there because of divine right.

As I said above, I used to be pretty apathetic about the royal family until fairly recently. Now I am firmly against. I think Liz 2 was the last acceptable face of this hideous institution, thhough the actual people (whether or not they are *****s, adulterers, attention seekers, professional victims or whatever) are irrelevant, it’s the institution which cements a cowed hierarchy, where we doff our hats to our ‘betters’ that stinks.

It’s brilliant mate. Just don’t think of it as a prediction or science fiction. It’s a description of 100% totalitarianism. The 3 main characters show three different ways to respond to knowing you are being totally oppressed. Mr Orwell wasn’t great at writing women characters or describing ‘intimate’ scenes though.

Never endingly relevant.

Do you think the Great British public would vote for the abolishment of the monarchy...the public who were so conned by the ruling classes and who loved Boris only 2 years ago.

Who queued 20 deep on the pavements in london yesterday. Who are throwing parties all over the country today

Do you all think honestly...that the Royal family would just go. I think you lot are in cloud cuckoo land

..And I am really not even thinking what the royal family would do here.

There would be a general uprising amongst the royalist masses...who exist in all levels of society..
The armed forces, every one who has sworn an oath of allegence to the Queen/King..

It is not want I want...(I have told you what I would like to happen)... it is what would happen.

If the monarchy goes in my children's lifetime it will by bloody revolution. I hope that will not happen

I still hope what will happen is a diminishing of size, and wealth gradually by generation, until they are just are a head of state that works hard working as a Head of state

Spot on Beth.
Thankfully the Republicans on here are in the minority.
All those people at the coronation and all those street parties show that the Monarchy will continue.
I agree that the Royal family should be slimmed down and I think we're seeing that already.

I think you are an outlier in your age group Raving.

If Charles croaks soon (and judging by his swollen hands his circulation is ****ed, or he has an autoimmune issue) I can see that there won’t be much public energy left for another funeral and coronation. And as for this idea of a bald forty something bloke being able to ‘transform’ the monarchy by connecting wiv da yoof……I think not.

Also sensationally bad value for money, according to the Daily Mail(!)
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/...chs-receive-hefty-public-subsidy-compare.html

All European royal families receive hefty public payments for their ‘official duties’ but ours is by far the most expensive. Plus ours is by far the richest, Charles has a pot of £1.8bn. All hard earned of course. Handily he doesn’t pay corporation or capital gains tax on his £40m pa income from the Duchies of Cornwall and Lancaster, and of course sovereigns don’t pay inheritance tax, like the rest of us. Even without removing the monarchy, surely this bollocks has to change? Oops, silly me, he’s anointed and consecrated by God, not my place to question.

I used to be pretty apathetic about the Royals, but recently I’ve become convinced they are a symbol of our long, increasingly rapid decline, a tabloid freak show, sedating the plebs. Get rid.

<laugh><laugh><laugh>
Get rid?
What are you going to do, storm the Palace? <laugh><laugh><laugh>

There’ll always be a Royal family. I’m optimistic this serfish devotion to people who don’t give a **** about us won’t be a thing in thirty years though.

The Princes Trust doesn't give a **** about people?
A lifetime of service from Queen Elizabeth 2nd didn't give a ****?
Charles, ahead of his time, campaigning for over 30 years concerned about climate change didn't give a ****?

I await the immature response.

Not like she had a choice.

This country is ****ed. He didn’t need to have a coronation at such cost at our expense at a time like this.

He could have gained some incredible PR by laying out for it himself but chose a lavish ceremony five times the cost of his mum’s in real terms. He could have paid some inheritance tax.

I read somewhere that the Royal's bring in billions more than they cost
Keep them while that continues

Windsor is the top visitor attraction in the country, probably because the Queen croaked. Buckingham Palace isn’t in the top ten visitor attractions in the country. It would still be there if they all disappeared tomorrow. There’s loads of better stuff to see and do in London alone.

I’m not against there being a RF even for all its nonce-defending and hounding out of evil Meghan. I’m against being pissed on and told it’s raining.

And just show all my Labour voting chums that things will never change

Labour’s response to this in general has been incredibly disappointing.

If we had something like PR (which, disappointingly, they also oppose) I’d vote LD or Green.

They’re still infinitely better than the alternative despite their many faults.

Why was he exempt inheritance tax

Perhaps not today, but they might vote for reducing the amount we pay for them, and making them pay their tax, at which point they might give up. I notice on here that it’s people my age and older who tend to be royalists, we won’t be around long.

Who queued 20 deep on the pavements in london yesterday. Who are throwing parties all over the country today

Estimated 100,000 in the Mall yesterday. 3 million from a smaller population in 1953. Many more listened on the radio and watched on the TV for Elizabeth as well. There were 3000 street parties yesterday. 10 million people went to street parties for the Silver Jubilee. This institution is nowhere near as popular as you think.

what century are you living in? An uprising of royalists? The King would demand that his armies attack the rest of the population? Probably a good argument for changing the oath of allegiance to Parliament, the country or even the ****ing flag though.

You don’t think we are grown up enough to chose a ceremonial head of state based on competence rather than birth?

Nah, just turn the money off. Perhaps you could get your hip fixed with the savings.

Don’t worry, you’ll still be able to doff your cap to your betters for the rest of your days, they ain’t leaving tomorrow.

We’d probably vote in the remaining Chuckle brother.

Actually I’m with you.
