@ SJP just didn't pull by the looks of it. There can't have been one single email inquiry about acquiring that one.

This is a marketing mistake, there will be fan outrage, how much doesn't really matter. The point is no company will want to be the target of the fans hatred for buying the naming rights. This isn't going to work. No ones going to 15 mio on the table to be the butt of jokes and being mentioned negatively in the press.

The way to do this is to do a cgi of a stadium fly-by and approach companies to show them what logos on the stadium could look like, actually doing it, and getting hounded for it is not good for business.

This.

If the decision can be made ridiculous it won't sell. Widespread derision is enough to prevent anyone paying for the prvilege of being derided.

Of course a savvy company can grab the opportunity to revert the Stadium name back to SJP, which has it's history and own traditional brand of sorts, and then reap the benefit of the positive reaction to that whilst integrating it's brand in somehow to leverage the rights purchase .. not sure how, but I never said I was a marketing genius, so back off .. grr <ok>

If a company did this and maybe replaced the signs in the ground with there company we wouldnt mind

Newcastle managing director Derek Llambias says the club can generate up to £10m a season by attracting a joint shirt and stadium sponsor (bbc sport)

My only question is how much has MA paid to rename the stadium? I assume nothing

I understand that NUFC need to be run in a way that means we are not reliant on owners and follow the 'Arsenal model' only difference is Arsenal didn't name the stadium after business' owned/run by owners i.e. Kroenke Sports Enterprises stadium for FREE.

Man City made app £400m for 10year deal thats £40mill a year for stadium + kit sponsor and DL is aiming for £8-£10mill!!! And apparently we need to generate this money to be able to challenge. Quote from DL

"We can't compare ourselves with Abramovich, we haven't got that sort of money. If we want to compete with the big boys we have to bring more revenue in"

Well if the 'big boys' are bringing in 4 times as much as us (in extra revenue) then how is that competing? All this just makes it pointless, £8mill a year isn't going to do much and it's upset all the fans.

I do agree with the fact that everyone will still call it St James Park, it just really aggrivates me that this is all done to buy new players, and challenge with the big boys and to strengthen our squad in Jan and the summer, when we all still waiting for the AC money to be invested and the promise to bring in a striker.

I was warming to MA and now he's gone a done something stupid again. The thing is every one expects a mid table finish say 10th, if we finish in the top 6 we would make nearly £8mill on a higher league place

...because he's a cnut!

After having last night and this morning to think about it I'm not quite as disgusted as I was. I'm not a fan of it by any means, but the financial benefits are there as shown by Chelsea looking into the same thing, and all new stadiums selling their naming rights.

To balance that, I've no doubt whatsoever that no one (bar mackems) will ever call it anything other than SJP. Think on this, did 'I Sit Next to a Badger in the Leazes Corner' ever sit in the Leazes corner? No, he sat in the corner of the Sir John Hall Stand, which its been for the best part of two decades. Did anyone ever call the Gallowgate 'The Exhibition Stand'? No one I knew. Is this any different? Not an awful lot in fairness.

The perception to the rest of the world is irrelevent, as long as 50,000 people continue going to St James Park, getting off at St James Park metro station, hearing 'Home Newcastle' over the PA and supporting the team it'll always be St James Park. Certainly my kids will be told that, and I'm expecting to outlive Ashley myself, never mind them!

Firstly I don't particularly like ashley or dekka- need to emphasise that.

I have to say though that I'm flabbergasted at the response to this news.
A few thoughts....

1- we were told a few months ago that the stadium was up for naming rights

2- we are simply following a trend in modern football as clubs seek a firm financial footing

3- the press are whipping all of this up through irresponsible journalism (the bbc radio man last night hinted at a panto to come and the tv presenter Chris Hollins went from 'the Geordies won't like this' to 'most emails received this morning are basically saying what's in a name)'... Cue a dissappointed look on his smug face.

4- its about the football NOT the fixtures and fittings

5- only our opinions count and our stadium will always be SJP

Let's cut through all the crap, stick it to the lazy journo's who seek to derail our progress and get behind our attacking, third place team.

In future years the history books will show the league tables and not reflect sponsorship etc that was prevalent at the time.

One love.... NUFC.
