I agree, but if anyone buys the rights I see it being Arena at the end instead of Stadium sadly.

Arena just sounds American, despite obviously coming from the Latin...

If it ended up being called The Arena of Doom or something I'd have no problem. Maybe id Software can buy it?

Someone e-mail id software! Can use St James' Park to sell Doom 4. Would certainly prefer seeing imps, pinkydemons, Barons of Hell, Cyberdemons plastered everywhere instead of Sports Direct.

The Newcastle Super Arena of Doom, Greggs, Cybermen, Vampires, Hitler, and the Super Devil @ The Seven Circles of Hell.com or [email protected] for short has a certain ring to it I think.

You seriously can't understand why this is getting to some people? Guess I'm just a real stick in the mud because tradition and heritage in football matter to me. This isn't a personal dig at you, but I don't understand how people can just sit there and be happy at the way football is going and the greedy bastards that are coming in and ruining the game for everybody who's followed it for so long, all just to make a quick buck of the backs of those very people. Just say he got money for the sponsorship, would it go into buying new players, call me a cynic but would it ****.

You're right in that eventually the wounds will heal and that life will go on, Mike's just banking on it to have simmered down to some degree by the Chelsea game but it won't, there will be loads of negative chanting and there's a chance it will impact on the players' concentration if they can make out the words. The timing of it is absolutely dreadful, all of this should have been organised in the close season or they should have waited until June/July next year. After all this initial outrage is over that will still be my major point of contention, what on earth were they thinking of choosing to do it now.

Have enormous flamethrowers on each corner of the stadium that send up 50 foot fireballs every time we score.

Your ground is completly different to the one of the 1970's etc, you might as well have moved.

You're allowed an opinion and I wasn't having a dig either. It's just i'm really not bothered and life goes on maybe it's just my perception of the game, i'm only 18 and have therefore only ever known the 'big money' side of things so maybe that skews my views. The reason it doesn't bother me really though is that football is just that, it's the game on the pitch and the results that are important to me. It doesn't matter how much money they pump in or what anyone does to the stadium all that matters to me is those 11 players on a Saturday and the result that's what I love and nothing gets in the way of it.

    I'm pissed off.

But I can't see how it's going to have a direct effect on the perfomances. The fans will still turn out - we always do - and may sing a few more anti-Ashley songs. Can't imagine the players really getting that affected by that, they're a close-knit bunch, with seemingly great morale with a good manager and some leaders. I'm not worried about it affecting perfomances one bit.

Me neither. The Anti-Ashley thing was at it's peak during the Championship season, and the team faired pretty well.

You just know Sports direct are going to "buy" the ground name and shirt sponsor next season. If it isnt them it will be someone else ****, like currys.

Like someone said earlier, I don't think Ashley is stupid enough to put it on the shirts because he know the sales will plummet.

This has pissed me off I wont lie, but not a massive amount like it would have a while ago, theres a lot Ashley has managed to get right this season so for once I'm going to go out on a limb and trust that hes doing this for the good of the club and not just his pocket. The more money that comes in the more chance of some being spent to bolster the squad and continue our impressive turn around on the pitch.

To be perfectly honest the stadium is already called the "SportsDirect@stjamespark" stadium technically isn't it? How many of us, other fans (barring the mackems) and pundits etc... actually call it that? Its even still called SJP on FIFA and the like still.

The name change doesn't take anything away from the fact that we have a fantastic stadium, fantastic fans, a great group of players and a competent manager, these are the most important things and these hopefully shouldn't be harmed substantially by this.

The stadium is and always will be St James' Park in my eyes.

Don't say it sounds American, the only 'arenas' we have in North America have ice in them, and a roof overhead, and I can hardly even think of any pro hockey arenas here that even have 'arena' in the name

That aside, I have to believe he does want to eventually sell the naming rights, because his 'expert branding consultants' must tell him he can make more money from that than SD windfall profits. I also honestly do believe future generations will still call it SJP, fans hear fellow fans call it by name more than Sky Sports pundits and announcers...the real name won't die
